Default radiator pressure question c1

I run a 160 thermostat in MY 61.I have noticed I'll pull car in garage after a good ride on a warm day.car seems to be keeping temps in 180 areas higher when I'm running 70 mph on highway driving.then she drops right down when off high speed driving.
It seems after I shut car and grab upper hose it's filled with pressure.almost like thermostats in a closed position.
I would think thermostat would be completely open when motor is hot.any explanation /suggestion.
Removing thermostat for summer is not what I think is the answer, possible drilling a bypass hole in existing thermostat.

So what is the problem ?
Is the car puking coolant, acting like its overheating, detonation, any abnormal behavior ?
Do you believe your temp gauge ? Have you confirmed it with an I/R temp gun ?

Kevin,
Lets see if I can answer this cryptic post.
I believe if your temps rise when on the highway then air flow is not an issue but it is probably insufficient radiator capacity.
The thermostat controls the minimum temperature that the engine will run at.
The radiator cap is was controls the maximum pressure in the cooling system. Ours should be 7#'s.
I would not remove the stat but I do drill two 1/8" holes in mine.

Never puking.occasional symptoms with overheating.no detonation.temp gauge is accurate.

Maybe you could share what you call the 'occasional symptoms of overheating'. Your first description didn't sound like there was any unusual problem occurring. Things get warm, pressure builds, regardless of whether the thermostat is open or not.

The pressurized upper hose after the engine warms is perfectly normal. And, although your thermostat will be fully open, that has nothing to do with hose pressure. The pressure will be the same everywhere in the cooling system.... even just below the thermostat.

Your posting is difficult to decipher but I'm tending to believe you don't have an overheating problem.
