The tank is out - next step
I have the tank out - see pic. Unless I hear otherwise my plan is to bend up the front welded edge of the tank. I am a little concerned because the welded seam is almost at the edge on the driver's side of the tank - thoughts? I'm going to leak check by putting a few PSI of air into the tank and checking for leaks unless someone has a better suggestion.
Also see pic of the tank compartment. Anything I should do before reinstalling the tank?

I'm thinking the same way you are. I could bend the lip on my Corvette Central tank - but it could very well create a leak. A new tank is around $200. That's not a lot of money but there is some work involved in putting in a new tank.
I think I would go with a Quanta tank since they feel they've solved most of their problems with fit. Who knows?
The other alternative is to just leave the cover off for a while. I have enough issues to deal with it might be best to just move on.
I had the car out and drove it around last week. That was more fun.
I still waiting for my refurbished Minilite wheels to arrive. That should be in interesting look.

Bending the lip - and the corner
Because more people said to bend the lip up I did that. But what do I now do about the corner? Of course I can rebend it down but that will increase the likelihood of a leak. See pic.

After some more bending the tank look good on a trial fit but after install was complete determined that the brass fitting to the gas line is too far rearward. Since there aren't any options have just put getting a new gas tank on the list.
So - where do I buy a gas tank that fits without modification that's NCRS correct?

Really. How hard is it for a vendor to make a gas tank that actually fits? I still haven't heard back from my friends at Corvette Central. I may have to find a new parts supplier.
This is the point where I should have stopped. When the supplier can't even bother to bend the corner down I should have paid attention. Nahhh Not me. I just went ahead and installed it.
The trick is to put the new tank in place and then try to fit the cover. If the cover won't fit you have a bad tank. I skipped that step. Now I have to take everything apart.
The folks at Quanta claim that their tank is NCRS correct and actually fits. We just haven't heard from anyone who has actually bought one. Corvette Central told me that their tanks fit. Seriously.

Most replacement/reproduction fuel tank FITMENT issues I've been involved in, whether C1 Corvettes or '67-'69 Camaros, were the result of failure to duplicate the four localized flange reworks where the straps go around the tank; the flange was bent on original tanks by the production supplier, but the repro suppliers apparently didn't get the memo. Never saw one that wouldn't fit if the flanges were bent correctly so the straps would reach.

Are the arrows point to the flanges you mentioned?

'61 Tank Cover Temporary Fix
I bought some pan head phillips screws #10 x 1-1/4 in and nylon spacers at the local big box store. Then attached the cover for now - anyone looking casually won't really notice and it's on tight. Have to grind a little off the front screws since they probably should just be 1 - 1/8 in. Of course now any gas fumes will vent out through the gap. When I get someone who has bought a tank recently to say that it fits without modification and NCRS is OK they will get my business. In the pic the short screw is the reproduction that I bought and the long screw and spacer are big box.

Quanta claims to have redesigned their tank recently. They claim it fits now. No one has actually tried it though. Corvette Central, Zip and Long Island Corvette Supply seem to be in hiding. Or, they aren't vouching for their products.
I like the idea of using small spacers. At least it won't warp the fiberglass cover. I can put it in place with the little spacers and hope that someone will make a correct part.
Here's how Corvette Central bends the edge for the retaining straps.

Yes - those are the areas that must be properly bent for strap clearance.
Using spacers under the tank cover is really going to stink up the cockpit with gas smell - that joint is supposed to be sealed so it's ventilated from underneath.

There actually isn't any gas smell. And I'm going to buy a new tank anyway as soon as I find one that actually fits and is OK for judging. Anyone bought one lately that fits the bill?
