Default '63-'67 radio block off plate

Has anyone made a blockoff plate to fill the opening where '63-'67 radio normally sits? Picture? I know plugs exist of **** openings, but who sells them? No, I'm not creating some rare creature. Dennis

I saw a 67 at a show where he made a radio blank off plate out of fiberglass and painted with the same paint as he did the dash and it did not look to bad, but he was trying to say it was original? As we know a original radio delete cars had no holes at all in the dash.

But an uncut radio panel area makes a "stripper" (no options base model) look like a racer!

I may make my own plate or have a shop make it. I'm changing out my stereo system since my glove box CD changer just died. I have a aftermarket radio in the dash now that will need to come out. I plan on installingl a head unit (Alpine CDE SXM145BT) in the glove box and plug the dash opening. The orig radio is in the garage, but I'm not having it modified. Anymore thoughts or pics of glove box installs? Dennis

A radio was just another option until the 1978 models or thereabout and they then became part of the base package The year all cars came with a radio......If you didn`t want a radio in your 78, confirmed deleting it was proper and you actually received a credit for its value......And no holes in the center dash if it wasn`t ordered. That was how I ordered my 63.

as a foot note, it also came with a 64 rear window

I'm working on one right now, still in the beta stage. I used some 1/4" aluminum and milled it 1/8" deep around the edge so it will fit snug in the hole, installed some studs and a plate to secure it. I'm thinking I might find a picture of a stock radio and stick it on the plate.

Dennis,
Why not put the original in to fill the hole, but not hook it up?

Tom, I thought about that, but I might use that space for something else. Right now the radio near the finish line is a Kenwood KDC-X798. It has a wireless remote controller, but I may need to make the plate with a small window for a line of sight sensor to control the head unit since the glove box door would normally block it. It's a work in progress.

Buns, that's a great photo of the rear mounting. I see you modified the ***** and bolted them through the opening. I may follow suite on this. Dennis

You could use a pair of the heater delete **** covers to cover the radio **** holes:

I made a radio block off plate out of fibreglass. I have a couple of crashed Harley Davidson tour pacs that I used for material. My stereo head unit was mounted in the Glove Box too. I found that I could mount a gauge in the Radio plate because the radio rectangular hole is exactly 2" wide. Actually one could mount 2 gauges the plate, up and down. I mounted a fuel press gauge there for my FI. I have since changed that because the H.U. in the glove box was a colossal pain in the @ss. I now have a "RetroSound Model 2" head unit which seems to be a very good unit feeding 2 300w amps. The only problem is I can't see the display on the H.U. in the sun [convertible]. But I couldn't see the display on my old unit either in the sun. I then made another block off plate for my clock hole which I have now installed my f.p. gauge. I make an insert the size of the hole attached to the back of the plate so it can't slide around and I have been able to use the gauge retainer to also hold the plate in place from the rear.

Didn't want to cut my radio-less center dash panel or put the unit in the glove box. Ended up mounting a standard (horizontal) radio/tape jead unit in the luggage area, on a little table in front of the passsenger-side rear wheel hump.

I tune and adjust the Kenwood's volume by "Braille" (touch), it's an easy reach behind the passenger seat.

Should mention my car is a convertible, so all is hidden under the deck. Hardtop only, a folded soft top might get in the way. A coupe installation would have to be prettier, maybe carpeted to match over an enclosure?

Ya, jeeez .. I wouldn't wanna cut out my radio delete hole if I had one ... We had a local guy just do that. Did a nice job. Still no antenna hole tho.

Since you already have the dash out why not just cut a piece of glass to fit the opening and glass over the area to look like factory original?
