Four Hour Oil Change
Hmmmm, What I thought was a quick oil change became a real PITA.
1- '57 283ci, PF 131 long filter canister. Dirty oil. Unknown age and oil type.
2- Reading FULL on dipstick.
3- Drained oil, removed filter.
4- New filter, replenished 6 qts API SM oil plus 16 oz ZDDP additive.
5- Ran engine, 60 PSI as before( probably HV pump)
6- No reading on dipstick. Wait a minute, no reading on dipstick.
7- Check under car for big puddle...... No big puddle.
8- Measure drained oil from fresh drainpan, 8 quarts!
9- Play for a hour or so with other dipsticks, other tubes, coat hanger depth tests, etc, etc. Not making sense.
10- Any dipstick never makes it into oil pan without hitting something.
11- Probably a baffle in this 270HP built-up 283. maybe a blockage?.
12- Damn. Gotta' remove oilpan.
13- Bingo. Baffle there, not like I've seen before. Not 5 Studs, 6 Studs. One Stud is through and blocking the dipstick hole in the baffle.
14- Remove baffle and 6th stud, cut stud below cap nut, replace, re-torque, etc.
15- Install missing lower dipstick tube, upper tube, dipstick.
16- No more blockage.
16- Replace trapdoor oilpan using new gaskets etc.
17- Refill oil, reading full now with 6 qts.
All better. My first 4 hour oil change. Gotta be a record.

p.s. Can anyone ID the pistons and connecting rods? Appear to be forged pistons and hi-perf connecting rods.

Been there, Done that..
Bought my 62 20 years ago and while checking it out I found that there was to much oil in the crankcase.
I bought the car drove it a few miles and decided to change the oil.
Drained the oil and replaced the filter, PF141, and added 6 quarts.
The dipstick showed very much over full.
Drained the oil, measured it (6 qts) and put it back in .
Same very high readings and the dipstick felt odd when I put it in.
Dropped the pan and found the dipstick on the top of the windage tray.
Bubba installed the tray backwards so the dipstick hit it and then was deflected over the top of the tray. PITA but easily fixed.
I bought the car drove it a few miles and decided to change the oil.

Hmmmm, pricey little devils aren't they? Do you think the pistons are forged from looking at the underside. Really smooth in there.
Yup, the top of this baffle had scratches from the stick on both sides of the stud.
Because it's the 6 Qt trap door pan and the PF 131 tall filter capacity, I guess the oil never got over the baffle..........
unless it had 2 more quarts in it.

Not Crower Sportsman's because they are an "I" beam rod. You are showing an "H" beam rod and based on the etching on the sides, they are Eagle "H" beams. Can't see enough of the piston to comment.
