Default 327 in 1959.

I've been running a 327 870 engine in my '59 since 1991. Numbers on pad are S134730 FIOIISB. Have searched and searched, finding only that the SB Suffix relates to an HP engine used in a full size Chev with auto trans. Can someone help with any additional or different info.

The "SB" suffix was used in '62-'63-'64 for the 327/250hp 4-barrel Powerglide application in full-size cars; your engine came out of a St. Louis-built Impala. The block casting date will tell you which model year.

Thanks John. Appreciate the feedback. I need to continue the research though. Block is J-2-2. Motors manual shows the SB to be an HP engine, and it does have a hi-lift cam with solid lifters.

Then someone has messed with it - it wasn't born that way. The October '62 casting date says it was in a '63 Impala, and full-size cars didn't get small-block engines with solid lifters; only Corvettes did, but those two engines in '63 (340hp and 360hp F.I.) had "RE" and "RF" suffixes. The Motors Manual isn't a reliable source of detail information.

The "SB" suffix engine is classified as a "high performance" engine as it is a 300 hp (optional) 327 engine with powerglide from a St Louis built full size car.
The 250 hp 327/pg was an "S" suffix.

Thanks gents. You've more than likely given me what I needed to know. I can put this issue of identifying my engine to bed. Appreciate all the feedback.
