Default Suspension squeak (or creak)

The suspension on the left side creaks whenever I bounce the front end, even after a lube job. I see the PO placed a wedge in the coil spring on the left side, presumably to adjust height.
Can that be what's causing my creak?

Polyurethane sway bar bushings? Spray a bit of Wd 40 on the bar around the bushing and see if creak goes away

Norm,

I chased a few squeaks and creaks when I got my '60 back on the road. It appears you think it's coming from the front end, but it may be coming from the rear leaf springs even though you're bouncing the front. All of my squeaks were from the rear springs. I ended up putting a lot of WD40 between the leafs and got rid of the noise.

If you can get a helper to bounce the car, both front and rear, you can get under the car while they bounce it and you may be able to better pinpoint the source of the creak.

If you're not sure of the source of noise, get a spray bottle of water (with maybe a touch of dish soap in it if you want) and just start spraying areas to see if you can find it that way. The water won't hurt anything and you can spray it anywhere and everywhere without making an oily mess.

Yea, that sounds like a good idea. I have a friend coming over today. Thanks for the tip!

Lube your upper control arms with the weight on the wheels and then again with the wheels hanging free.

That type of spring wedge is also a prime contributor to broken springs - its sharp edges create stress risers on the coil surfaces.

Yes John, I can see that. I remember the screw in type, which i would think would be better. Until I get around to replacing the springs, what type do you recommend?

All spring spacers interfere with the normal torsion action of the spring coils. I wouldn't (and don't) use any spacer.

Then how do you adjust the height w/o replacing the spring?

I found my squeak! A coil on the left front spring was riding hard against the housing, possibly because of that spacer. I dobbed grease on it and it doesn't squeak anymore. Hallelujah!
This winter I will replace both springs.

The correct way would be to place a shim between the spring and the lower control arm. That allows all of the spring coils to function correctly.

Obviously this would be a lot of work. If the front of the car sits too low, might as well replace the spring if you are going to go to this much trouble.

Getting ready to trailer it to two states away to a car show & parade. Little worried about that spring now. If it should break, is the car still drivable? Will I be able to get it back on the trailer?

If it were mine, I'd just take that spacer out. That's the "safe" strategy.

How low does the car sit without the spacer? And why was it installed in the first place? Is there a broken spring coil?

I don't know, see post #1. The spring isn't broken and doing a search found another person with the same or similar problem.
