Barn find 66 427 what's it worth? With pictures
Hi I have a lead on a 1966 corvette convertible all original with a 427 (not sure about the horsepower yet) 4speed last ran in 1999. The car is in another state and I'm waiting for my brother to see it.
This is what I've been told... It's mosport with green interior, ordered in 1965 with a 396 but in 1966 they did away with the 396 so it came with a 427. It has soft and hardtop all original and local car but missing radiator. The carb was acting up and it's been parked inside since. Factory side pipes.... My brother says the frame is rusted what should I pay?
Also the owner contacted my brother and is ready to sell....
He also has a 1969 camaro 427 and has documents to prove its a Baldwin motion car... What's it worth? I can buy both if the price is right

If the frame is rusted, it is quite likely that the birdcage is rusted. If that is the case, I would avoid the car entirely as it will cost more to repair and restore (even to basic drive-ability) that the car would ever be worth.
On the other hand, if the rust is minimal (as in surface rust), the birdcage is clean, is a documented 425HP car, and if all original, it could be worth quite a bit as a survivor/bow tie candidate (assuming it can clean up).
I would give it a range of $0 to $100,000. Quite a range, huh?
Just saw the engine compartment picture - make that range closer to the $0 number. I'll bet the car is rusted through and through. I would not bother.

Assuming the engine we see in the pics is the original, the cast iron intake, smaller carb and (rusty) chrome valve covers would mean it was a 390 horse 427. Due to the location of the car, I realize the pics don't show a lot of detail but there does appear to be rust present on the passenger side frame rail. But, any time you run across a Bigblock midyear, it's worth investigating. Keep us posted.

Safety Car
D3=December 3, 1966 production. Early car with vin number around 6S107200.
Rare Mossport Green 982AA paint one of 2311 made that color in 1966. I like it, kinda silver green.
Trim 430BA= Green vinyl. The BA means NO power windows, Headrest seats, Hard top, and Automatic Powerglide trans. I see a hardtop, so the car has one that may have been purchased after delivery to the dealer.
The chrome valve covers are a 68-69 item. ALL 66 427 cars had steel painted orange covers. So, you really need to inspect the engine pad and see if the ''ORIGINAL ENGINE'' is in the car. I see orange paint on the intake under the front of the carb, which tells me the engine may be the 427/390hp unit.
I like how the car is on a cement floor, and not in the dirt like the Camaro. Also, the body looks very original and never hit. Today, that is a real plus.
The underhood rust on the Camaro looks decent, and not at all rusty.
If all the stars line up, and the Corvette is a 425hp original engine car, and not a 390hp and has its original ''IP'' and vin code engine, AFTER restoration it could be worth 75000-85000 in todays world. What is the tach redline? 6000 or 6500? 6000 was the 390 engine.
Same with the Camaro, once all its numbers and paperwork have been verified. Question is, it will cost evey bit of the above $$$$$ to restore each car, so Don's estimate may be correct.
Are you ready to go to work and restore these cars and at least get them running and back on the highway? There may be some real upside here if you and the seller can reach a value. He is not stupid and as he watches the AUCTIONS on his TV as you do. Visit with him. He has a number. Question is, can you both agree.
