Default I made this tool to remove a part that most won't even attempt.

Hi...I'm going to play the "Can you guess" game that Rich pulled on us a week go.

I made this tool to remove something that most people and even machine shops claim is virtually impossible to get out so most just leave it in....but this simple tool took it right out with no problem.

To get this part out, you need a special tool and most machine shops end up making their own that is pretty fancy.

I'll let you guess, and if nobody is close, I'll give you a hint.

Hmmm. Scale? What size is it? Thread size and length?

If it's 1/2x13 and 8" long.....
Front frame crossmember, lower hole dent puller?

If it's 1/4x20 and 4" long......
Body dent puller?

If you made it to pull wheel bearing outer races, there's an easier way...

The "most just leave it in" hint ought to be a give away, as simple as these cars are. I'll admit, beyond my first comment, I'm stumped.

I would say "muffler bearing remover", but the 58 muffler bearing is easily removable with just a screwdriver.

A BFS at that.

I think I know what it is but I can't tell.

Agreed, it certainly looks like a bearing race puller.

Kevin (Rhino) was SO CLOSE and maybe this is what he was actually thinking...but Plasticman (John) nailed it.

It is a RACER puller for the steering column. I used it to pull the racer that is way down inside the steering column.

The critical piece is the small flat metal plate at the end. This piece goes in at an angle (ergo me accentuating the angled pieces in the picture) and "catches" the racer. I'll provide the exact dimensions in another post cause I think this tool can be useful for those rebuilding their steering column.

This same "concept" was used to remove the racer and bearing where the "lash" adjustment is...except I just used another small piece (different dimension) of flat metal, and then I used a bolt where the lash adjustment screw goes to push it out. The hole you see in the center...that was just so I could move the piece around before I tighten the bolt.

With some very simple tools...I was able to remove all the bearings and racers in less than an hour.

Very cool.
A "tools" sticky with a list of descriptions/links to tools like this could of value.

That would be a valuable sticky!

Dennis,

Yes, please post the dimensions, and congrats! Well done!

Dennis and I were talking the other day and he asked about the worm gear inner race removal inside the steering box. I told him he needs a blind bearing puller like they have for motorcycle bearings, but it needs to be
1-1/2" to catch the backside of the race.

Very Clever Dennis !!!! Great idea.

Default Tool

Couldn't you just ask the racer to step out?....or threaten the racer with a fine if he didn't remove himself from his housing????

Thanks guys!

I'll create a post on the exact dimensions cause the smaller metal plate size is critical. If you're familiar with the steering box, you may understand what I'm about to say...not even sure I can describe it very well and I'll need to make a drawing of it...but let me try.

Right below the bottom lip of the racer (where you have to grip), the metal is recessed outward just like the racer itself, then the metal comes inward. This spacing allows you to make the flat plate slightly bigger than the diameter of the racer itself....so when you slip it in at an angle, than pull it up behind the racer, it grabs it. If you made it slightly too small, you can move it to the side of the racer and still grab it...ergo why the plate has rounded edges that contour to the radius of the tubing the racer is sitting in.

I'm not sure that made any sense, but when I create my post, you'll be able to see exactly what I'm saying.

I'll show which tool I use to remove what racer/bearing. And like I said, you don't need any fancy tools to do it...except a puller that I used on one.
