Default 1965 Ignition Swithh

I need to replace the ignition switch on my 65 and can't find any one that sells them. It seems that they have been discontinued for some reason and they are specific to 1965 model year only. Does anyone know who sells them or if a switch from another year like a 63-64 or a 66-67 or a car other than a Corvette will work on a 65.

You might note that you don't need the keyed portion, just the electrical switch part if possible.

I believe the 1965 GM passenger cars used them. I have a couple of used ones.

I need the switch that the wiring harness plugs into as well as the lock cylinder. Has anyone used a switch for a 67 on a 65. It looks like the blade connectors are the same but the sockets for the plastic retainers on the wiring harness plug are different. I might could make that work if I can't find a 65 switch

That's not a 65. All the vendors have the 66 in stock.

Why do you need the lock cylinder? Are you going with two keys for door and ignition, or having one or the other rekeyed to match? I know you have a bad connection on your old one, is there an issue with the lock also?

I want them both, I removed the switch from the car, when I removed the lock assembly it looked like bubba had been messing with it. The key always turned kinda hard and didn't want to spring back from the start position very freely so now I know why. I might as well replace everything new while I'm at it.

A few months ago, Pacific Corvette had a 1965 NOS switch for sale. Another source is Pete Lindahl at 505-412-2389 or 505-663-0995. These are/should be NOS units and are priced accordingly.

I have also found Ebay to be a source. There are some USA replacement switches (usually) available for less cost.

I help a friend get an NOS one from Pete last year, and did some research for this task. But I agree, they are not that easy to find.

Take a look at this one, see if it might be what you need. You can buy the cylinder and keys pretty cheap on ebay or from other vendors.

It looks like the blade connectors might be the same but it has no provisions for the plastic retainer prongs on the harness plug to secure the harness connection plug to the switch. I think I will order a 67 switch today from NAPA, because theirs are only $20 + dollars and I would have the same harness connection problem as with any of the other suggested replacements so far . If I can't make it work I can always return it being they are just up the street. That will at least get me running until I locate something more correct.

You might check first, normally the return policy is no returns on electrical parts. Good luck, post if that fixes your turn signal, etc problems.

I bought a new 1967 ignition switch and a new 1967 key lock cylinder from NAPA yesterday. The blade connectors were the exact same as my '65. My wire harness plug, plugged easily into the new '67 switch. The three plastic retainers on my wire harness plug were misaligned with the three retainer sockets on the new switch so I put three wire ties on the retainers and they held the plug and switch together very securely. The '65 retainer nut on the outside of the dash fit the '67 switch perfectly. I had to use the '67 key lock on the '67 switch because it is different than the '65 key lock. Mine was messed up anyway. After finishing the install, it looks completely stock, the car starts and runs fine, the signal lights, windshield wipers, heater motor and temperature gauge all work fine. This '67 switch does not have a provision for a light bulb, that's not an issue with me at this point. Hopefully I can find a'65 switch sometime in the future. Many thanks to 65GGvert for all of his help.
