Redline tires
#22
\balance nice no rubs .

I have a 67 big block and just bought a set of repo bolt-on wheels to replace the Cragars on the car now.
The plan is to get a set of redline radials.
I've looked at Coker and Diamondback. I prefer the Diamondbacks but am concerned that because they have to modify/shave the tire to apply the redline, this will weaken the tire.
Questions:
1. Can someone address my concern about the potential weakening of the Diamondback tire?
2. Size: I'm thinking of 215/70/15 to get more tread on the road as compared with the 205/75/15 which I believe is the size tire that came on the car when new. My goal is to have a low profile stance and good performance.
Any suggestions? Comments? Advice?
Thanks!!!

Could one of you guys with the 215 70 15's post pictures of the front fender area so we can see and compare the fit. John says they will rub the fender but several of you guys are running the tire with no issue. I just talked to James at DB and he says the diameter of the 205 and the 215 is the same. The rubbing issue is because the tire is wider. James prefers the 215 70 tire over the 205 for lots of reasons. I have R&P steering on my car so my turning radius is not as sharp as oem. Michelins are still available in 215 70. I think the wider tire is going to look better on a midyear.
James also can use the Cooper tire in 205 15 70 for a redline. Jack, this is another option for you.

John was talking about 215/75-15 tires.
215/70-15 or 205/75-15 are (very close to) the same diameter as the original 7.75-15 tires.
I have 215/70-15 Pirelli P4000 tires on mine and there are no issues, except for a very minor rub at the idler arm bolts at full lock since these are wider than originals. These are Z rated and stick like glue!!! They must be special-ordered.

Where did you get the Pirelli's?

It seems no matter what, it comes down to owner preference, but the good thing is either choice, there shouldn't be issues with the redline creation of the tire.

He shouldn't even have the Coker on the list he wouldn't if he could see the back of the tire. They don't balance ,there too soft ,ride terrible. Silverton redlines Coker junk for sure.
Send mine back had a hart time 20% restocking fee.
Diamond back you get what you pay for.

I had these tires on my 65 before selling them to GGvert. The Coker tires were perfect and as he mentioned before they were dated 2003.

There are a lot of people on this forum that would agree with me on this its been brought up before. Don't you think its time for a new set of tires looks like there are 11 years old ,try the Diamonds backs this time you wont be disappointed.

I've checked prices on Diamondback and talked to them directly. I don't have a problem with Diamondback. I also don't have a problem with Coker. I am not trying to change your mind. You trashed Coker, I merely pointed out that I had a set on my car that have been perfect. Lot of people think if they have an opinion, anyone who disagrees is stupid. I think hearing other opinions helps make an informed opinion. The fact that others on the forum agree with you doesn't mean it's the only option out there. I would probably have ordered Diamondback Redlines when I talked to them last week if Michelin still made the 75 series tire. For now, I'm just thinking it over.

To the O/P you had a question about the sidewall strength on the Diamond Backs. A friend of mine had them do a set of wide 20s for a 850 horsepower Shelby and they withstood all the abuse that engine to put them through.

It was a big inconvenience to me not to mention I had to pay for the return shipping.
After upon there return that one of the tires I send back could not be balanced they still did nothing.

That's good to hear. Seems like people really love the DB's and I'm looking forward to getting mine on the car.

Just to add to the DB praise..... I auto-x my 64 with 215/70 R15's. No sidewall issues. Tire are Michelin Defenders.

I have Diamondback 215 X 70"s on my 67 BB and I did have a fender rub issue on the right front. It only happens when I make a hard right turn and go over a bump or a rise in the road. If you are aware of that, there is no problem. I will probably go with the narrower size on my 65.
