Safelite? They do good work from what I've seen, but they don't use OE glass (I think you can request it). Their stuff is supposedly a little thinner, and cheaper. That's why a lot of insurance companies have deals with them.

Edit: Maybe I should mention I took my '66 to place that does a lot of classics and muscle cars so they knew what they were doing. And they have a good supplier.

What year? Most auto glass outfits won't TOUCH a pre-'68 Corvette.

And I wouldn't want them to. I doubt they even have the tools/expertise to remove the trim moldings..

I doubt they have the tools or skill set to handle our glass. Not to mention the odds of all your trim clips being re-usable. Experience with this task is a plus.

While these windshield guys can swap out a windshield on a 2003 whatever in the time it takes you to run to the bathroom they would crap their pants if told to replace a C-2 windshield.

Don't do it......................................

2nd this!

ALL these old Vettes leak water. This is an ideal time for you to address that windshield channel for any surface rust and seal it off. All that trim, like others have said, does need to be removed. Safelite will be over their heads doing this replacement.

Don't do it. They in NY screwed up my 2000 S70 Volvo (sold) and screwed up my 2004 745li (leaks). They even drilled around my 67 vette windshield to prevent a rock cracking and failed. I am having a body shop in Nutley NJ do mine (will be there tomorrow with vette getting paint). GWB 7am here I come.

I took the trim off myself. All they have to do is drop in the glass. I will remove the oem glass and install new clips. I would think a monkey could do that but then again I've met some monkeys more intelligent than some humanoids.

Fred, do it yourself. I've been following your paint posts and if you can paint your own vettes the windshield is well within your skill level.

If not willing to take it on themselves, an established auto glass shop should be able to direct you to another shop that does do classic car windshield replacement.
On the other hand, if you are willing to take on the windshield replacement yourself, there are a few first timer DIY threads describing how to do it in the archives. .. Not hard to do.

If you can remove the trim you can install the windshield. It's not that hard. Remove all the trim and rope in the windshield. If I were closer I would gladly help out..

Do it yourself, not a hard job.

Most of the problem NOW A DAYS is the reproduction clips ( they are not long enough). when trying to use them with different gaskets and windshields that vary in thickness, then throw some non fitting reproduction moldings in to the mix and an installer who works primarily on newer vehicles and you have a If you are working with the original moldings you have a much better chance of a decent result. By all means do it yourself if you have the ability. Pilot Dan

I haven't had to have any work done on my windshield (knock on wood) but I've read where some folks on the forum were having to have it replaced due to traffic hazards (rocks thrown from other vehicles, etc.) and turning in to their insurance company. Would a classic car insurance company, I currently have Haggerty, be able to steer me to a qualified installer?

I had my '61 windshield replaced and the insurance company wrote a check for $2,700 and didn't bat an eye....that was based on two estimates from top restorers in my area.

I found those folks myself and, although I removed the frame and carried it to the shop, they did the actual R&R of the windshield.

I DID call SafeLite out and the guys looked at the car and never got out of their van...they laughed and said "no way" and drove off.

I would very much like to hear how this turns out for you. I've been reading other threads on this topic as I consider taking on this job too. Just as people here suggested you do it yourself, people on the other thread suggested it be farmed out to a pro. ... I don't mind paying someone to do the job right, but I don't want to pay someone to do a lousy job that I have to redo anyhow. Keep us posted.

Made that ride more than once in recent years because of cancelled flights out of Newark, JFK, etc...
