63 disc brake conversion

Default 63 disc brake conversion

i want to put power disc brake conversion on my 63 conv . i would like to keep my stock spindles and retain stock width . i see that i may have to notch the hood or shim the booster/ master cylinder down. also want a dual master cylinder . i also want to retain the stock drum brakes in the rear. who has the best kit that works correctly. i am also installing the borgeson power steering and don't want any interference between the two .

Corvette America has a kit that has everything, but the calipers are standard GM single piston, not Vette four piston units. The kit has power brakes also. About $1000. Zip has a package that has the disc conversion using Vette four piston calipers, and new spindles, but no power brake conversion hardware, about $1000. Dennis

1) must notch hood to clear the dual master w/ booster
2) will require a M/C that has residual valve in the rear for the drums (camaro) or an inline valve
3) Swapping spindles and everything from a donor car is the best way, but widens the track by .75"
4) as mentioned, maintaining stock spindles will require a modded single piston caliper.

If it was me, Id do a 69+ spindle swap, complete.

Just did my 64 with 4 wheel power disc brakes. CSSB (Corvette Stainless Steel Brakes) sold the entire kit. They sell front only kits and P/S kits too. Their kit is a 65-66 brake set up. (dual piston calipers). 63-64 KO's will fit. My steel wheels fit but apparently not original 64's. Zip sells the hood patch ( F-672). The kit from CSSB comes with new spindles in the front and completely rebuilt trailing arms in the back. (bolt on set up). I've got the same track as a 65-66 Corvette would have. I think it's the same as 63-64. (No body mods) other than hood. Hope this helps...good look!

Hasn't someone "shimmed" the top of the booster mounts so the master cylinder is pointed down thus avoiding the hood?

Yes. 1/2" bushing (shims) if I remember right. I think I saw that on one of the Corvette Fever or Vette magazine builds. Also covered here on the tread (Shimming brake booster on 64) or search Alexandervdr

When you read what they printed below, what in the heck is this supposed to even mean?

"Please Note: Must use 15" or larger wheels with this kit. This kit increases track 1.5"."

If it increases the track by 1.5", what is NO OFFSET-ZERO MOVEMENT even mean???

And, if you have to change the stock 15" wheels to something that can accommodate the caliper or rotor (they don't say), how is this any better than using a real Corvette system from a later model and having to change the wheels or add spacers? Certainly the twin puck Corvette calipers would be better than those single pucks from some passenger vehicle.
