461 or 692 Heads on stroked 283????
I'm maybe doing an engine swap soon and want opinions on which heads to use. The engine that would be going in is a 283 with a 327 crank with 1960 692 heads. The car currently has 64-65ish 461 heads that I thought would out perform the 692s.
Would the double hump 461s be better on it?? Intake is the stock 2x4 with clone carbs.

My '59 283 270hp SLC dual 4 came to me 28 years ago with 461's from a '65. In 1995 I rebuilt the engine, bored 30 over, new pistons, cam, etc. I kept the 461's and had them rebuilt. Neither block nor heads were decked as they were fine according to the machine shop.
I cc'd the stock valved 461's then, and with new sealed power domed forged pistons, IIRC I got around 10.5:1 CR. I opted for a slightly aggressive Crane hydraulic cam to walk away from solids for a while. I miss the solid cam exhaust note but have better idle vacuum, more tolerable and consistent carburetor operation, no more valve cover removal except for new valve seals a year or so ago.
Overall complete happiness with my choices for the last 19 years of operation.

Why are you building a 307? I have one I'll give you that is all apart and needs to be rebuilt. You have to pick it up, though.
It is a decent engine for cruising around town, but it doesn't make real power at all, just torque. It won't rev like a 327, without a lot of work. It won't work at high RPM at all, and you are looking at heads that are made to flow at higher RPM. so forget it.
I did something foolish once and built a destroked 307, destroked to 304 cid. We needed it to get under the 5 liter rule and it was all we had around at the time after I destroyed a 302.
Believe it or not, the 283 will rev a lot higher and be a lot faster.
