Muncie 4 speed removal
I am planning my winter projects for the 65. One potential project is removal of the trans for overhaul. Reason is that when the trans is hot, it grinds when shifting from 3 rd to 4 th. synchros?
My question is how difficult is it to remove the trans with the engine left in?
My last trans pull was on my Factory 5 Cobra with a T5. I still have nightmares about that one. Lots of twisting and turning to get it out.

Melting Slicks
It's not too hard. When I replaced mine (66 327) with an RS500, it seemed easier to just drop the trans. What we didn't realize was that the new trans was way too long to install without pulling the engine. If I were just removing it with the plan to reinstall it, I'd leave the engine in.

If you don't have a chevrolet shop manual, the key steps are..
Pulling the under car exhaust and drive shaft
Removing the shifter and it's bracket (transmission or crossmember mount)
Support the rear of the engine with a floor jack and a trick wood tool. John Z has previously posted a pic. Archives...
Remove the trans mounting bolts, and lower the rear of the engine.
You now have room to pull it out. Look out for oil, front and rear. The slip yoke makes a nice cap on the rear.

Removal of muncie from a C2 with a small block and side pipes.
1. Remove the center console and boot
2. Remove the reverse back up light switch
3. Disconnect the speedo cable
4. Disconnect the shifter linkage from the tranny and the shifter from the bracket. Disconnect and pull out from the top.
5. Remove the drive shaft ubolts from the transmission yoke. Rotate the wheel to get to each of them. Use tape around the bearings to keep the them in place! You don't want them to fall and have those needles everywhere! Do the same at the rear. The driveshaft will drop when you push the yoke forward and back. You can keep the driveshaft out and away hanging from the emergency brake cable.
6. After putting a transmission jack or similar in place under the muncie and a jack under the oil pan (be careful), remove the shifter bracket and transmission mount.
7. Now you're in business. I'd get a helping hand to make it less of a struggle. Remove the muncie's yoke and pull the transmission out of the bell housing. You will have to pull back and turn to barely get the input shaft past the bell housing. No need to lower the engine(I have a small block, you might need to for a BB). I also have side pipes which helps! Watch your transmission insulation from tearing!
