Default L88 motor value

What would be a fair price for an original 67 L88 with tripower motor? I was talking to a guy the other day and he said that he had an original L88 motor on a stand in his gargage, and he might be interested in selling it but doesn't know what it's really worth. I told him I would ask the members of the forum they would have a good idea. Thanks

What year and did it come out of a car?

If it did, and the car is still around, then it's worth a lot more.

Can it be proven beyond a shadow of a doubt? Hearsay is of little value for anything L88.

It came out of a 67 for sure. For what he said, it's the real thing.

If "trips" means tripower carbs, then it is more than likely not an L88. Could still be worth some money if an L71, then it goes down from there. Of course, every spare engine sitting around always came out of a 67 Corvette.....

an L88 is a sacred motor. It was never prepared with Tri Power, but may have been added later? Casting date, casting number and engine pad info is of paramount importance. Those items make the difference between a 2K 351 block and a 25K or more L88 motor. ARA. If the VIN is on the pad, I would ask the "guys" who know if the car is still alive. ARA

If it's a real 1967 Corvette L88 engine, I'm thinking it's worth more than a nice small block C2.

Only 20 1967 L-88 Corvettes were built, and all of them are accounted for. Hundreds (if not thousands) of carb-to-pan L-88 engines were sold over the counter; what's the casting number, casting date, and front pad stamping on this guy's engine?

I always find it interesting that some folks have this really rare stuff on a stand... apparently know what it is, yet have no clue to the value.

My guess is he will get smart pretty fast, and whatever YOU offer, won't be enough...

Believe it when you see it.

Agreed. I'm through offering people a price on their stuff, have never been successful with this method just wasted efforts. Note to sellers, do your research!! Ebay completed sales are an excellent resource but don't expect a comparable offer outside of ebay, those prices are elevated due to service fees and the general ebay/paypal risks. I hear this crap constantly at swap meets and those sellers typically just pack their stuff up at the end of the day.

Default This is why it's good to have

1. the big deep pocket Corvette types out there, where it is good that they have the financial capability to run down each lead on a doubtful possible L-88. Going out, they know they have a Tri-carb (hope it's not a Pontiac, but that could be turned for money) and also some type of Big Block that might be worth the trip or time.
2. If it turns into the real thing or even an L-71/L-89 engine, then especially on an L-89 a lot of guys would be upset for not moving!
3. Sounds like the friend has about the equivalent of an 4th grade eduction, at least in Corvette 101.
4. OP poster, stopped at one of the right places by visiting the forum, but is naïve and with the resource of the internet and such could have taken some minutes to research and go back and evaluate or lead friend to a better conclusion as to what they have or
5. they are baiting the hook for a big phony ebay killing, that will never happen!

^this^

I am always open to the unusual if it can be proved, but the owner's hearsay, now at least third hand, and with tri-power, but with no evidenced knowledge of the value is a shaky start to credibility.
