Default used tremec 5 speed

any forum member know where I might purchase a used tremec
5 speed tranny? I have been looking for over a year and cannot seem
to locate a used one? I have tried the parts forum have tried looking
on ebay and racingjunk.com and craigslist? cannot find a used one??

I cannot afford to pay $3500 for a new one. would like to find a used
one for around $1800-$2000. any other suggestions or advice is
greatly appreciated. is there any other used transmissions other than
tremec that would fit and work in my 66 coupe?? I heard Richmond
makes a 5 speed but it is very noisy. so I don't think I want a Richmond? any other brands that might work? thanks

Look into a Borg Warner T5 transmission. Not a hard conversion. Plenty of info if you use the"search" function. If you beat on your gear box, upgrade the T5 with a G Force gear set.

100%

Love mine for the past 7 years. May never be as strong as the new trannys being sold today, but a good WC T5 will give you plenty of trouble free years and miles at a fraction of the cost.

Pretty much 3 mods. Rear mount, shifter location and rehanging the exhaust. Not that hard at all. Lots of great info out there. Good luck.

There are a number of T5's on ebay currently . . . you need to be careful that you source a V8 model, and preferably a "World Class" model as they are more "robust" than the non world class models. Here's a great resource to determine which models would work:

http://www.britishv8.org/Articles/Bo...T5-ID-Tags.htm

Of the 2 complete T5's on ebay currently . . . this one may work:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/COMPLETE-1982-92-Camaro-Firebird-CONVERSION-AUTO-TO-5-SPEED-T-5-TRANSMISSION-/261633311012?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3cea8f8124&vxp=mtr
Good luck!

At $3500 you must be talking the whole kit. Several vendors have a new Tremac 5 speed TKO500 trans only for about $2400

please tell me where is the one for $2400 and I will buy it?

I was told a Borg warner T5 tranny would not work on my 450 HP
chevy small block. was told I need a Tremec TKO tranny.

every tremec I find on ebay I around $3500 - $4000 for the whole
kit for a corvette? seems like the tremecs for a ford are cheaper??
don't know why ? any way I have been looking and cannot see any
less than $3500. should I look other than ebay? I sort of been
looking on craigslist and don't see any used tremecs?? thanks

While I had my T5 rebuilt by a friend of mine before installing it in my '66, I'm not so sure he did a very good job - it was his first T5! I'm pulling the engine/T5 this weekend and doing what I should have done in the first place . . . taking it to the experts! . . . G Force Transmissions. When they're done with it, and with their "Street 5 Speed T5" upgrade, it will be good for 600 hp and 500 ft lb of torque. That should do it!

Jegs and American Powertrain sell trans by it self for about $2400.

Please explain if they have an offset shifter to fit in the stock console and what does rehang the exhaust mean? Thanks

Hi Steve, I dont know if anyone sells a bolt on T5 shifter for a Corvette installation, probably not, but it wasn't that hard to make it look correct.

Mine is in a 77, and I also put 1 in my 68. In both cars I wanted the shifter to be in the correct location and look stock inside the car. Pretty sure a midyear would also need the shifter altered to look correct.

In both cars I used Camaro WC T5's with a mustang stock T5 shifter. Reason being with the Ford shifter, the shaft on it is vertical, not tilted. I didnt use the t5 bellhousing, which tilts the trans, I used the stock vette bell to keep the trans straight. Heres a pic, you can see the 2 gold bolts on the tilt.

Just to give you an idea of where I had to go with it here's a pic, which you can see had to be slid over a few inches to the left. Again, this is in a c3 not c2, not sure where it would come through in a midyear, maybe not as off, dont know.

Thats the 1st one for the 68, for the 2nd one for the 77 it's a lot lighter and simple. Works great.

Here's my rear mount, made from the original rear mount on the car. With the trans vertical, not on the tilt, the mount needs to match it.

What I meant by rehang the exhaust is, like the rear mount, the stock exhaust hanger was also made on the tilt to work. Mine may be a little overkill, have seen it done several different ways, just do a search for the pics, but its solid for sure. Again, the stock mount was used.

Well done John! The Gforce guys show an accessory for C2 Vette's so maybe that is a kit for what you did? I want a 5 speed but the Tremec is huge and the T5 looks a little smaller so I will call them. Not making big power but want to cruise and the M21 is a pita around town. Can save it as the car is numbers matching. Thanks

Talk to Silversport, they had posted Trans only for $2395, not the whole kit. I helped a friend install their kit in a C1 and it went in nicely.
