I must know a dozen people like tubman all with similar experience. Pretty hard to refute such data.

Guys, don't get me wrong. If one of my cars gets upwards of 3000 miles on an oil change, I'll do it. I'm just saying that at my age some of my cars won't even get close to that number. Also, I am not an anti-maintenance clod. Right now, I am changing the brake fluid on 3 of my cars. I bought an electronic brake fluid tester, and those cars should have their brake fluid changed because the water content is exceeding 3%. It's just that changing oil every year on a car that gets 200 to 1500 miles on it is a waste of time and money. Your time would be better spent 2 out of 3 of those years watching and attending to the brake fluid and anti freeze (which is next years project for me).

There again, I know lots of people who never change brake fluid or coolant. Probably the majority of car owners actually.

I'm not near a window. Has the sky fallen yet?

Change old-school organic oil frequently. Leave synthetic in for years at the annual mileage many of you are accumulating.

Yesterday I did the 63 Impala as I used it quite a bit, one of the few cars I'll take the dog in. I followed some advice I once read here about pushing the canister up against the O ring before tightening it up. I had been doing it my way for the past 12 years (spin it until it stops & tighten).

Proud of the job I started her up and watched the oil pour out of the top of the canister. You gotta be fu#%*&g kidding me!

I put the wrench on it and gave it another tweak and heard pop! as it seated. Must have had it cocked in there. Down it came, quart of Brad Penn on the driveway. Re-installed my way, all set.

This morning I took another look at the oil in the Corvette, it looks brand new, I ain't changing that mo fo till next july. I've had enough. (Except I have to do the 56 Caddy, but that one is almost as easy as my big block Mopars).

I may finally have been broken of my change it every year habbit, at least on the Vette & Plymouth Superstock that go 300/500 miles tops in a season.

Dan

That might have been my advice as that's the way I do it. I just spin it by hand until it's inside the groove in the block (to make sure it's not hung up) and then shove up on it and tighten the bolt.

I don't spin the canister AGAINST the rubber ring. That could dislodge it.

You would see that the thousands of tiny time pills had had all run down. Oh, wait, that's Contac cold capsules.
