Default Correct Oil Pan

What is the correct part number for a 1966 427 ci / 390 hp oil pan? Does it need to have the center hole to bolt to the timing chain cover?

The correct pan will have one but you will need to have the correct timming cover to make use of the center hole. And you can add the hole. There is not a part number stamped on the pan. You can still get the pan from GM. you just need to weld on the correct corner reenforcements And add the correct drain plug bolt

Does that mean that the correct timing cover must have the bottom hole? And, does the correct drain plug have marks or letters on it?

The reproductions are damn close to correct. I compared an original and a repro a few years ago and could not tell the difference. I believe i had to drill the hole for the timing cover, but that was it. The reinforcments on the sides all looked correct...it made it through NCRS and bloomington judging, although i dont really remember them looking at it much.

All 65-66 BBC engines had the timing cover with the center hole and oil pan to match. The drain plug is a 7/8 hex head. All 50, and 60's Chevy engines use the same plug

Just a question, I have a 67 427/390. What is the correct oil quantity for my oil pan. I can only get about 4 1/2 quarts of oil in it according to the dip stick. I know the dip stick is correct. I think I have a smaller pan and believe it should be a 5-6 quart pan but not sure.

All '65-'74 Corvette big-blocks used the same oil pan, and it held five quarts (plus a sixth quart in the filter).

Thanks John 'Z', looking at mine and comparing it to your illustration above makes me think I have a smaller pan. The sump part of your pan looks a bit longer than mine. I guess a smaller one would fit but would not be correct. Guess I'll have to put one on my list. Thanks again.

Check the length of the sump. It should be 11" long.

Does the head have any letters like F-C or a large A in a circle?

An "A" in a circle, "TR", and "L" are typical headmarks.
