Default Labor for softtop replacement

What would be a reasonable labor charge for having a softtop replaced on a 1967? My top was replaced in 1997 with a white top and I would like to make it black and replace the rubber.
The car came with black when it was new.
Thanks
Dave

Check the Al Knoch website for his prices on this work. They are around $650 for mid-years.

You may find a better deal locally, but not certain you will find a better fit than his workers can/will do.

He is my choice when the time comes for my 1967 car.

I did mine myself, and I can see how labor could greatly vary depending on what you are asking for and the starting condition of the frame. On mine, I probably spent 10 + hours cleaning & painting the soft top frame, removing & replacing damaged hardware, and replacing all the tach strips before I even started to put the actual canvas on. A good shop could do the last part in a day or less at whatever their labor rate is. Pilot Dan

I just did mine about a month ago and it turned out great. I stripped and repainted the frame which didn't need any repairs. I replaced the weatherstripping and installed the vinyl top. With the assistance of the Al Knoch video ( watched it 5 or 6 times prior) and getting some in process tips from Larry ( forum member Woodsdesign who has done many many tops), it probably took 8 hours for the frame and another 8 for the vinyl install. I figured with the install rate our here of about $750, I could mess up two tops and if the third was ok I would still be ok. Leave me a PM if you want to try and tackle it and I'll provide any help I can.

Sounds about right unless the installer runs in to problems...

Thanks, I was thinking $600 plus parts. I went to a local shop and he said $700 to $900 labor. I will try another shop.

Is it possible to remove existing top without damaging it? My top is in good shape but the frame needs restoring. Thanks, Rick

I guess anything is possible but it wouldn't be easy. When you do the install, after you staple on the front bow and the rear bows, you trim off the excess vinyl to make it neat. You do the same on the sides. This, I think, would make it hard to grab and reinstall. Besides that you would have to carefully remove every staple so as not ruin the top which would take a very long time. I think with Knoch vinyl tops selling for about $240, I would probably replace it. If you did want to try, get the Al Knoch tape and reverse the procedure. You would also need to buy a new strip for the rear bow that covers that seam ( the one with the silver ends). Good luck whichever way you go.
