That's for cooling air to the alternator.

Interesting. I don't think the shroud on my '64 has a hole there.

And the alternator has its own cooling fan built in, besides, the air still gets heated by the radiator...

'63-'65 small-blocks have the alternator on the
passenger side (except with A/C), and have welded steel fan shrouds.
