Default Engine Rebuild Cost

I've been looking for a 942 2 bolt bare block to build. I got an email from a guy who said he has a complete engine for sale. (Casting number and date I'm looking for.) Since I have heads manifolds and etc. I said I would be interested in just the short block. He offered to rebuild it with new parts and all machining; ready for final assembly for $6900. Is that a good price? I have no idea. I did some research on his business and it is legitimate and highly recommended.

not no, but hell no.....way overpriced imo, you must see block in person to check numbers and for half that price you should be able to buy what you want.....built for you.

DO NOT PROCEED! You could have a boat anchor and he can disavow any responsibility for any and everything. Check you area for machine shops. Talk to guys in your area who have performance built BB engines. Go visit the machine shops and look at what they are building or rebuilding. Look for cleanleness, organization and check on references. Don't get wrapped around the date issue if you find the right casting. It will always be a replacement engine. Just get a rebuildable block or engine. When you make a pick, get every procedure, part number and cost on paper and how and what they guarantee. Cost, about 3k-4k +/- for a street/performance build. Take your time! Dennis

You're absolutely right. I've been looking for a 942 2 bolt bare block for months. I can find plenty of 4 bolt (which I think should be more difficult), but no 2 bolt. I know it's buyer beware, but it's also a matter of supply. I am getting references for the shop and their work. I have found that they were on an episode of Haulin.

If you're in the LA area and know of David Sokolowski, let me know if you know of his work. Or, if you know of a 942 2 bolt block, let me know.

Default Block

David Sokolowski is a parts dealer, not a machine shop. I have bought many parts from him and he has always been great to deal with. I would not hesitate to buy from him, but he is not the cheapest. I would want my own local machine shop to do any work.

I would ask "What does he want for the bare block and what he wants for a built short block".

Help everyone gauge (a) the price of the rare block and (b) the cost of machine work.
