What should a 61 NOM driver cost?
Hi all,
I originally posted this under new members as it was my first post but probably best to throw it in here.
I've just started researching in order to aid my search for a 61/62 solid axle driver. The only requirement is black paint, black interior, other than that I'm not all that fussed. I prefer the look of a black 61 with the silver coves than an all black 62 but I'm guessing the actual coves are the same so paint could perhaps solve that. Not interested in originality, just want a tidy car that doesn't need much if anything done to have a reliable driver.
I'm no stranger to GM V8s as my daily drive runs an LS2 but I've never owned a Vette before.
The biggest problem I have is I'm in Australia and am struggling to understand the massive variation in price for these cars with no obvious (to me at least) reasons. I've posted up a bunch of links to some cars for sale with gradually increasing prices and I'd greatly appreciate if someone could explain the reasons, assuming there are any, so that I know what's potentially a reasonable car and what's either a can of worms or just simply overpriced. And from that I'm hoping to deduce what a "driver" NOM 61/62 vette should be worth before I start forking out for international airfares for cars that may not be worth my time.

Greetings
Yes, that is basically a scammers website. If you are going through all the trouble of buying a C1 and have it shipped to Australia, you really need to get the best car you can afford. Every little thing that has to be shipped from the US (that you might need "later") will be very expensive when shipping is added.
I'd recommend finding somebody to help you find a car. Are you planning to come to the US to get it once the deal gets close to being done, or are you buying sight unseen, and crossing your fingers that you don't get screwed?
I usually post what I find in my daily search here at the Opinions of these C1/C2s thread
Go there and scroll down through them, and if you post in that thread, you will get updates when I add them.
To answer you question, I'd say a Driver 61/62 will be in the Mid-40s. A driver implies a lot of things though.... when you boil the water off, its a way of saying "This car needs something". Maybe its paint, maybe an interior... maybe the suspension and frame haven't been touched since it left the factory... all of those things add up VERY FAST.
If you are chasing "driver car" ads from Australia, you will be a day late and a dollar short almost every time.
My suggestion would be to put an ad in the Forum's Classifieds. Explain your situation, because you are going to need time to make the deal go through, and you need a buyer with some patience to help you get your car on the other side of the world.
Also, it maybe a good idea to get the best car you can afford... in whatever color you find it in. You can paint it on your end when it arrives. Paint will probably be the least of your worries to be honest.
Check out other peoples WTB threads as well... often, cars that are passed on would be perfect for somebody else.

I just looked through some of the ads on Vette Hound and found a Maroon 65 396 Coupe listed as being in New York for $28,500 but the same Coupe is for sale in Arizona on eBay for $72,900. Probably wise to find another site when shopping for ballpark prices.

here are two real ads that are on the NY Craig's list site. They have both been up for a while now.

These prices seem legit to me for the condition of the cars.
Good luck in your search

You'd better be damn careful - there are listings at Vette Hound that are straight up ripoffs.
This one is a Mike Coletta top-of-the-line restomod built in the last 1-1/2 years that I test drove after completion and sold close to the $150K mark....that's even Mike's house in the background!
http://www.vettehound.com/geo/classi...hp?a=2&b=11649
Now its for sale for $32,000 out of Montana and license plate conveniently photo-shopped out ?
This has 'scam' written all over it.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I had a feeling the cheapies sounded too good to be true. At least now I know and all it cost me was 5 minutes on an awesome forum instead of a shedload of money.
Cheers,

To restate your phrase "If it is to good to be true it is not true"!!!!!
I just had a scammer want to buy my 57 Corvette which is on Ebay.
If the email ends with "Cheers" be careful.

You have great taste, but some risk in trying to buy one long distance. Unfortunately, the desirability of your dream car attracts dodgy types into the equation.
I would strongly suggest that you find a trustworthy knowledgable Corvette person to check out any cars of interest in person. It could save you a ton of heartache and money.
Good luck!

1. There's a bunch of Corvette clubs in Australia. Why don't you contact them for advice?
2. There's a Corvette dealer in California called "GM Downunder." They advertise that they sell Corvettes all over the world. They don't mention Australia on their website. But their logo has a kangaroo driving a C1 Corvette on what looks like the right hand side. Don't know anything about them.

here is a site that will cover what your looking for and more.
http://www.searchtempest.com/
here is a 62, not black but all there with both tops priced decent @35,5. They also have another 62, fuelie priced around where it should be, perhaps a tad high. Place is about an hour north of Indianapolis, Indiana. Good size Oz cumminty here, heck, you can even buy crumpets here. (wife is an ozzie from NSW)
