Repainting in a non-original color? Regrets?
I'm in the process of having my 65 restored, and it gets painted soon.
It's a nicely original accident-free maroon on maroon coupe, without the original motor. I like the maroon, but it isn't my favorite color and I'm having thoughts of changing it to something I like more. I don't intend to sell the car anytime soon (it's been in the family forever), but I don't want to do something that could greatly devalue it either. Options I'm considering:
1) Keep it the correct shade of maroon.
2) Keep it maroon, but with a 3 stage paint, as sometimes the original color would seem a bit lackluster.
3) Change it to silver- favorite of the offered 65 colors.
4) Change to grey- now getting into the custom look, probably my favorite color but most polarizing.
What did you do with your car, and in particular did you regret changing colors if you did? Does straying from the trim tag color significantly hurt the car's value?

You should also consider your budget.
It is typically cheaper to have a car re-sprayed the existing color than to deal with color change in the jambs and areas not typically addressed.
What did I do? This was a saddle car with saddle interior. Now titanio grigio metallic with a canna di fucile metallic stripe (PPG Ferarri catalog). Do I regret it??? Look at the results. Would you???

I'm always in favor of painting it a color you like when you plan on owning it and not for quick flip. If it's not a matching high option car I don't think the value drop is so drastic with a color change in most cases. I do prefer originally offered colors over what's popular at the moment (like gunmetal)- this is straight preference however.
Also, I do recommend base coat/clear over single stage paint, but that's just me, too.

Stay original. Maroon with maroon interior is quite rare and sought after. I missed a 327/350 maroon/maroon car a couple of years ago and am still pisse*. For resale, value, work (no other exterior color goes with a maroon interior other than white) so if you change outside you gotta change inside too. That's a lot of money and work. If its an original motor car, I would strongly suggest staying original. You will post here in 5 years thanking all of us. Just my two cents. ARA

I changed the color on mine to one I wanted - Sunfire Yellow, from a color that just wasn't one of my favorites. I also changed from vinyl to leather. My car is also NOM and as a BB car had led a hard life. I built it the way I wanted - sticking to original available colors and trim. No regrets. I'll probably die with the car out in the garage so let the next owner deal with it in 25 or 30 years.

I tend to agree with this sentiment... but hey, its your car, so you spend the money on the paint you want.
As far as value goes, Its kind of hard to say, cause each buyer is different. When I was looking, I didn't care so much about what color it was, as long as it matched the trim tag. I "devalued" the ones I was looking at to the tune of how much it'd cost me to paint it the correct color. My car buying budget didn't really allow for a purchase, then a repaint (my budget was $40K shipped), so I didn't really look at cars that were not the color that was on the trim tag.

It's your car to do with as you like, but consider that down the road, some potential buyers will knock $10K-$15K off your asking price to compensate for the expense of repairing a color change.

I am big on changing the color the right way
Eliminating or removing all signs of the former color behind and under everything, in the interior and under the car etc. if someone is changing the color. I hate seeing a car done, half a$$ is all!

Guy local to me has been trying for months to sell a beautiful Maroon 67 L79 convertible mid-high $60s price, with gorgeous original body panels, nice dry frame and original drive train. No stories original engine with beautiful stamp pad. Should sell easily right? But it has a problem. The Trim tag says 972 Ermine White instead of 988 Marl Maroon. Oops. Somebody wanted a maroon car, and not a white car. Big mistake.

I know a guy in town that sprayed his midyear coupe gray. It should have been offered from the factory.
With that said... color is one of the things that sells a car. I'd paint it how you like it and it will likely end up that the next guy likes it too. This assumes it isn't some crazy color.

A lot of it will depend on how original your car is. An incorrect color on an otherwise correct car is much larger hit than a non original color on a modified car, in fact, I suspect a generic original color may be a deduct on a restorod.

Can you change the trim tag and put in a white interior, with the moron with big flakes in 8 stage? That would really pop, but would make the car worthless.
I would change the trim tag and paint it saddle tan, because that is a rare color even though it looks like shlt. Woops....no shlt tan for 1965......my bad. Better still, paint it green, and change the trim tag.
I would look up the rarest color combination that you can find, no matter how ugly and repulsive it is for you. Paint it THAT color and change the trim tag. Every time you drive your nice, ugly car, bring along some Alka Seltzer to calm down your nausea and also bring along a barf bag just in case.
After all....it's all about $$$$$$$$, not pleasure, isn't it?

Its a NOM and its your car, so do what you want. I think silver or grey with a maroon interior would be the ticket. Good Luck
