C2 Corvette Hardtop Storage
I am the original owner of a 63 Roadster and have always stored the hardtop on a large Plywood shelf. I need to move the storage location of the top and I considering purchasing one of the rollaway type storage carts. I would appreciate any recommendations on this style of storage for storing the hardtop. The plywood shelf has worked well, a little difficult getting on and off, in addition the new storage location may not have adequate room for such a large shelf.
Another consideration is the hoist style. Some of these that I reviewed state that this style if for removal and installation and not storage. I probably would be a little concerned about storing the top above the car with pulleys and ropes.
Thanks in advance for your comments!

This is how I did mine. I cut a piece of metal electrical conduit pipe to fit exactly between the mounting ears to keep its shape and then ran a piece of threaded Rod thru with a nut on each side. Put some heavy J hooks on the wall and just hang the top on it. I can post pics if you like.

Kind of hard to see, but I couldn't go back any further. I used a piece of 3/4 inch electrical conduit, but in the future I would use a bit heavier pipe as the conduit isn't very strong and bows a bit under the weight. I ran a long piece of threaded rod thru the pipe with a nut on each side, and made sure to screw the hooks directly to the studs in the wall.

I'm in NJ so earthquakes aren't really a concern. I'm sure you could use a deeper hook or bolt it down - if it still gave way at that point, your car is already in trouble!

Does anyone have dimensions/plans or a source of same for the top holding cart. I don't have enough wall space available for top hanging other than in the living room and bedroom which might meet with protests.
Would like to build a wooden cart for mine. Dave

I haven't been on for awhile and I'm just catching up on things. I build a cart with 2" PVC pipe and small roller wheels from HD. It holds the top for my 56 vette. It is currently at our other shop but if your interested in details send me a PM and I will shoot a picture and measurements to you

I found it needed some mods for my tastes:
1) I had to put spacers on the wheel nuts to raise the cart off them so the wheels could turn 360*
2) The blackish foam padding left black residue on my white top after storage so I wrapped wide-diameter pipe insulation around those areas
3) The top is a little flaky in the fixture when rolling it around so I added a horizontal adjustable strap and buckle at the top of the two vertical posts to loosely wrap around the top
I was storing the top overhead on a hoist but when I had my 4 post lift installed that went out the window.

Thanks for the info Frankie. Your explanation of the mods you did to your cart will be helpful. I think I'll build one since I'll have plenty of time this OH winter and I'm sure I'll find your info of help. Thanks, Dave

I know this is an old thread, but of the two pictures with the top hanging on the wall, is there any advantage to hanging it glass up or down? I have some old metal gas pipe to use for a spacer and don't think it will flex much.
