My webernet over here has been up and down with the storms.....

The Pass cars are 3 1/2", Corvette is 3 1/4" so you shouldn't be able to stick your finger in there.

Those dogbone shapes in the pic that Frank posted can help visualize why you can't stick your finger in the space. If Corvette, you can't.

Rich
p.s. Level? but with respect to what? Next time that gen is off maybe check those measurements as a sanity test.

Well...then maybe there isn't a problem after all. This whole thing started with the bolts in as shown in the assembly manual.

In regards to "level to what"....whole car is still up on jack and the frame is level.

I did measure from the enter of the tack drive shaft to a bolt that I held against the one in the bracket and I got about 2 1/2".

I'm pretty sure it's all correct. The bolts put in the wrong direction and the comment that I should be able to stick my finger between the generator bracket threw me.

2 1/2' is way short. What's the tag# on that generator?

Looking at your picture....

Versus looking at this Corvette generator and see if it matches.

I think you misunderstood me....I was measuring from the output of the tach-drive.

When I measure from the center of the pulley to the center of the bolt, I get 3 1/4".

The numbers on the generator at on this post...about 4 posts down.

Okay, that measurement isn't really meaningful when comparing generators, and yes the 3 1/4' one is right, but....

...then I thought....Gessh, you couldn't just type "1102043", then I see in Post#31(BTW, right click the post# in the upper right of the post and copy the URL and make a link next time, it's late here), your picture....

Do you have the correct pulley? The one with the 1/4" space between the pulley and the fan? It sure doesn't look like it in that photo. The 1957 pulley has no 1/4" space, yet is still 3 5/8" diameter. Maybe you got a '57 pulley on that late 57 generator. Unless you changed it since then. Maybe I'm just looking at it wrong.

Rich
p.s. sorry if I'm a little grouchy.... goin' to bed, been up since 4am.

Sorry about that. I thought it was on the link I copy and pasted. I didn't know about the number thing.

The number on the generator is 7G24 - 1957, (July 24, 1957) and I have an early 58 (hood brace on passenger side, not the drivers like most).

Not exactly sure what measurements you are referring to...but I believe the pulley is correct from me checking a long time ago.

He's referring to 1/4 inch space between the back of the pulley and the front of the fan which it looks like you may not have. Look at the last photo in post 23.

Ahh...thanks for pointing that out. On mine there is no space.

You'll get it sorted out. With Rich's help you'll be good to go.

Yup, wrong pulley. Maybe optical illusion, but I can see misalignment in your belt, and with the right pulley on there it'll kick your belt out more forward too.

I did this info-sheet using your pic and my pic.

Rich

FYI-Note that the 4" pulley for the HL Cam/FI applications, is NOT offset with a space between the backside of the pulley and the fan.

Here is a blown up picture of a '61 that the British did an in-depth analysis of based on a brand new Corvette in '61 for their MIRA document. Confirms Rich's diagnosis.

Rich...I wish I could say "thanks for the information". You know you're really starting to bug me finding things wrong with my car!! You go to stop this!

This really pisses me off....I rebuilt this generator...took it completely apart.

In putting a straight edge along side the water pump pulley...the belt is not parallel to the straight edge...it does go inward.

Now what??

Been there done that on my '63.

Rich is like the Doctor that keeps telling you to get a colonoscopy.
You know you have to do it sooner or later and he'll keep reminding you until you do

If you get the generator pulley spaced properly fore and aft I think it'll fix your belt alignment issue.

Funny you should mention that...I just had one a little over a week ago...all OK. I was freaked out about getting one...but after I did it, I realized it wasn't a big deal. The prep is the worst.

Anyway...I'm guessing that I have to get a whole new generator?

Correct pulleys are available, used or reproduction. I've used these with success.

You guys are too funny I just read the above responses.....You think of certain body parts and I'm in the subject line, ehh?

Yup, just need the pulley. Hardest part is getting your nuts tight. (I can't believe I said that)

I have a pulley...and I can't believe something has gone right. It's powder coated and the right pulley!

Rich told me all I have to do is remove the pulley and I can even do this on the car. WHEW!!!

Good - now tighten the nut enough to compress the lock washer.
