Default Holley on a 63 340hp intake?

Can a holley be used on a 1963 340hp aluminum intake? Judging by the configuration of the intake, i assume not.
If that is not possible, then i assume an edelbrock is the best aftermarket carburetor for the original intake?

Thanks

There may be an adapter to change to holley bolt pattern.

The old AFB's are pretty good carburetors you know.. If you go with the Edelbrock I believe the air cleaner base is a different dimension.

An Edelbrock is just a glorified AFB - might fit fine -- others here may know more.

I ran with an overhauled Carter AFB 3721SB that is the service replacement of an original '63 AFB carb that'll fit just fine. I ran with it for 6-7 months. They run superbly.

Its in storage as my 250hp car requires the WCFB - which I have just mounted on there.
Sent you a PM about the AFB BTW...

I think the Holley will require air cleaner differences; fuel line plumbing differences and, depending on which Holley, perhaps hood clearance problems. You can't play too many games with the air cleaners on Holleys because the typical 4150 needs beau coup clearance over the air vent tubes (some say 3/4").

A holley will not fit the 63 intake withhout an adapter. The adapter will not fit under the stock hood.

An Edelbrock will fit the 63 intake, but the air cleaner will not fit the Edelbrock.
Some have had success swapping the AFB top with the Edelbrock top (Non-AVS).

This is why I decided to go with a Z28 intake for my 383.

How about using the AFB manifold, with a Holley, and a '66 style drop base air cleaner for hood clearance?

That might work.....I have the spacer/Adapter on a shelf, but havent tried to fit it with a drop base. Good idea.

Just double check that the Holley butteflies dont hang up on the manifold holes. The 63 intake has very small diameter holes.

Thanks for the replies! I think I will probably just go with the 64-65 winters intake and a quick fuel carb then. Easy fix if anybody ever cares to switch it back.

Be aware that the newer Holley butterflies are larger than the holes in the 64-65 intakes. You may need to mod the intake

Not an issue with the oval slot plenums

I'll make sure to double check before ordering. Thanks

I'm not sure - but I was thinking the throat diameter of an Edelbrock and a Holley carb are the same. So you might be able to use a later Holley air cleaner base and a stock air cleaner lid on top of that. Possibly someone has tried that and will chime in.

That is correct. The Edelbrocks and Holleys have a 5 1/8" diameter, and the older AFBs have 4 7/32". The newer AFBs, like a 9625, use the 5 1/8" air cleaner base.

Yes, but he would need a drop base to use a Holley on the 63 intake. The 66 factory drop base is a good plan...if he didnt want to keep the 63 air cleaner. The 63 iintake and air cleaner are just problematic for upgrading in too many ways...

You can also use a 64/65 intake with a holley, and it looks just like the 63.

yes, I just took one off my 340 63. There was an adapter plate on intake. And modifications were made to the bottom of the air cleaner to fit.
