Disassembling 65 Seat Belt Buckle
I would like to have the lift up portion of the buckle powder coated. It appears that the pivot pin can be driven out to remove the front plate.
Does anyone have any experience taking one apart? Any advice is appreciated.

Drifting
step 1) On the end of the pin with the flat, you need to get the wedge out of the slot.
step 2) Remove the snap ring from pin from the inside of the buckel.
step 3) Drive the pin out from the end with the flat.
Note the placement of the spring before final disassembly.
Reverse order to reinstall however, you will need to twist the pin 3/4 turn to preload the spring before you slip the flat end of the pin home in the hole when putting them back together.
good luck,
tc

Melting Slicks
I've done quite a few of these, and here's the sequence that works best for me.
1. remove the snap ring. I go in though the tongue slot with 2 small picks and push on the ends to pop it off the shaft.
2. using a drift pin on the slotted end of the shaft, tap it slightly inboard to unload the spring.
3. Use a dental pick to push on the wedge from inside, going into the shaft slot next to the spring end.
4. If wedge won't move, from the outside push it side to side with the pick to get it loosened.
5. with the wedge out, the shaft can be removed. Note the washer between the lift lever and chrome side lip.
The correct finish on the buckle is kind of a splatter texture that I've never been able to duplicate. Nobody from Irving Air Chute has ever been dug up to explain what they did.
Anyway, having a good dental pick makes this job almost tolerable.
Good luck!
