Bay Area Air Quality Management letter in the mail
It's good to know the Bay Area Air Quality Management District is finding great ideas to spend our tax dollars by willing to pay me to scrap my 66 Vette. The bad thing is that they are only offering me $1K.
My wife thinks it's not a bad offer ...
or
Maybe it's time to adjust my fuel mixture 1/2 a turn down ?
See the below offer letter...

Adjust the fuel mixture maybe, but keep the car definitely. I got the same letter and am still hanging on to my '67.

One example of the many reasons why I left the state when I retired. I hope they don't outlaw driving it in the future - old cars may go the way of plastic bags?

Re the smog check within 60 day requirement why would they want you to pass smog if they are going to buy it and dismantle it? Seems like if you COULDN'T pass smog they would want to buy it and get you off the road.

The cars are all required to be dismantled for parts. If they can't pass smog the thinking is there are parts on the car that don't work properly and can't be sold as good used parts.
I just turned in a '92 Volvo to the Pick-N-Pull in Fairfield, CA and was given a check on the spot for $1000.00
They did a visual inspection and made me drive it 25 yards across the parking lot to prove it actually ran. There is a whole list of requirements. IE: At least one working headlight... doors...etc.
The car had a blown head gasket but passed smog. So it was eligible.

So they are suggesting people scrap their older vehicles and offer a payment of 1,000.
You know what the next step is..........

I'm a retired airline pilot and I got a kick out of some of the warning signs I would see in some of the California airport jet bridges. I remember at SMF they warned that fumes could be present that had been shown to cause cancer. Were people supposed to hold their breath until they got from the aircraft into the terminal? Beautiful state but...

Leaving CA 20 years ago greatly reduced stress in my life caused by the bureaucratic BS in that state. Not just cars, everything.
Once I crossed the Colorado river into AZ for the last time, it felt like I had escaped east Berlin for the west.
I can't even imagine what it is like now.

My son use to live in the East Bay area (Pleasanton) and I found the area to be beautiful. When I heard/read of some of the weird local laws enacted, I changed my mind about living in Ca. Besides the extremely high cost of living in comparison to the Midwest, you can't smoke on the golf course (on the course, not in the clubhouse either), the no toy mandate in a McDonalds Happy Meal. Motorcycles are allowed to travel in between lanes (most do so at high speed) and the weird list goes on and on. Too many strange ways of doing things to suit my tastes but to each their own. I suppose if I grew up there, I would be conditioned to the environment and accept the way things are but as an outsider, no thanks. I'll visit occasionally but would never consider living there.

Maryland is a close second. Try getting a concealed weapons permit in that state; and county piggyback tax is 1/2 state tax.
The MD DMV is still chasing me around for $4,900 they say I owe because I didn't turn in my tags before leaving the state SIXTEEN YEARS AGO. I've repeatedly told them to pound salt ... I DID turn the tags in and why wait 16 years to contact me about it anyway.

Wife is from Newport Beach, CA, and one son keeps a condo in San Diego. Plus we lived in SoCal and the Bay Area for several years, and we love to visit. Beautiful state. But as far as living there goes? As you kidding me?
One of the few things CA provides is a test for stupid legislation. Seriously, people sit around and dream up the crap that gets enacted into law out there.

I left too
Like others here I retired June 2012 moved to co in July 2012. I lived in ca for 36 yes never got used to traffic or politics. Gave up shooting thereyrs ago tired of waiting 1-2 hrs for a spot and fishing shoulder to shoulder to catch 12" and smaller trout. Pay lakes don't do it for me. There are great car shows and parts are generally a short distance if you don't get caught in traffic.

Hey, that's not a bad deal for a mid-year. My '91 cost almost 10 times as much, and I would still get the same $1,000 if I was in the Bay Area.
And I would have to produce a smog certificate so that they could destroy it.
