Unbelievable.

Maybe if I installed one for the left bank and one for the right bank and "lit" them both at the same time, I could get the 60 started.

And my 20-something sons, who have no idea what's under the hood of their fuel injected modern cars, think it's odd when I start my carbureted '65.

They don't have a clue why and how I use the gas pedal when doing so. They would have no idea what to make of any car with a manual choke.

My wife and I were down at the local Chevy dealer the other day talking to the finance guy about signing up for extended warranty on my wife's C6 GS. He commented that they finally removed any mention of carburetors in what's covered and what's not.

Cool Video! smouldering paper was the glow plug and shell kicks it over.
Charges were also used to start old aircraft engines and marine engines.
We've come a long way baby. Thanks for sharing

Great movie!

I own a '49 Ford 8n tractor with a flat head 4 cylinder motor. That thing sits outside all winter (full gas tank & batt. removed) and each spring will fire right up as though it was just running the day before! Try THAT with a new vehicle these days.

My first thought when I watched the video, too.

There used to be many uses for shotgun shells without projectiles, including 4, 8, and 10 gauge shells.

Default tractors in background

I would like to see whats involved to start those steam engine tractors in the background of this video. I've started a lot of oil and gas fired boilers but wood or coal fired must be a whole new game.

Wasn't quite sure how it worked so pulled this explanation off of Wikipedia....

The Coffman device used a large blank cartridge containing Cordite that, when fired, pushed a piston forward. A screw thread driven by the piston engaged with the engine, turning it over.[2] This was in contrast with other type of cartridge starter which acted directly to drive the engine piston down and so turn the rest of the engine over, such as those used on the Field-Marshall agricultural diesel tractor.

The R-1340 and R-1830 air-cooled radial engines had the Coffman provisions for "shotgun start", which was fitted to the Grumman F4F Wildcat fighter in WWII.
