C1 fuel tank
The bottom of my original gas tank has a black crusty material, I assume it's rust. So I'm considering buying a new one and be done with it. I probably want one with the baffles. Who is the best supplier for this?

Rockauto.com. $150. Get the Spectra one, Part # GM45C.
Also see what Quanta gets for them. I believe the Quanta tank is made by Spectra.
Yes, you want the 61-62 one - the one with the baffles.

That sounds reasonable. Thanks Chris! I checked with Quanta, they want $229. Also I've heard fuel tanks can be very difficult to install into a C1. The external dimensions for the Quanta is 42" x 14-7/8" x 9-1/2". Dimensions for the Rockauto is 43 5/8" x 16 1/4" x 10 1/8". Both are 16 gal.
Sounds like the Quanta would be easier to install. Any thoughts or experience with either?

Every year when I go to Carlisle, Quanta has a big site. They have stacks of boxes with gas tanks. The boxes all say "Made in Canada." The Spectra tank is made in Canada. The tank Spectra sells (spectrapremium.com) is:
"GM45C w/ Vent; w/ Baffle; 43-5/8 In. x 16-1/4 In. x 10-1/8 In."
The Quanta gas tank is also p/n GM45C.
I'm pretty sure that it's not a coincidence that the two tanks are made in Canada and have the same part number. I'm pretty sure the Quanta tank and the Rock Auto tank are the same Spectra tank. Why the difference in dimensions? I have no idea.
Note that the Quanta tank has the O.L. Anderson logo stamped on it. Don't know about the Rock Auto tank. Note that the logo can't be seen once the tank is installed. Also note that long after you're dead, someone will go in that compartment for something and see that logo. Or not.

Most of the repro tanks don't fit. You can follow this link. All of us here have had really bad experiences with the reproduction tanks.
Make sure that you get a written guarantee that the tank will actually fit. If the supplier won't do that for you then go to the next supplier. I'm still waiting for Corvette Central to get back to me. It's been over a year now.
Good luck on this and let us know if you find one that actually fits.

There's a new player in the gas tank market. I know nothing about them and have no experience with the product. Just calling it to everyone's attention.
They seem to be more into the Resto Mod thing than accurate reproductions.

This is what they say about Spectra at the Rockauto site, "Engineered to stringent tolerances based on our Canadian engineers' in-depth knowledge of the OE part it's designed to replace.
Fit tested on the very same vehicle application for which it was developed verifying first-hand that the design fits properly and can be easily installed".
If that is true, and I will call for that guarantee before I order, I see no reason to shop anywhere else as that is a good price.
Has anybody bought a tank from them and fitted it?

My new tank should be arriving today, and I have another question. I didn't order a new filler neck hose and prefer not to wait on it.
Is it acceptable to use radiator hose if I can find 2" diameter? Will it be impervious to gasoline?

Absolutely NOT - DON'T DO IT!. If you do, you'll become a fire department statistic. You need barrier fuel filler hose.

I'm very interested in how this tank fits. I think I'm going to put a new tank in my 62 rather then try to clean out the original. It hasn't been on the road since 1993.

You might not need a new tank. The balck crusty stuff could be an asphalt-based undercoating that someone spray on it at one time. Scrap it off and see what's underneath - might just be clear metal !

I'm probably going to try and install it this Friday & weekend. Will let everyone know. If it fits, I wouldn't go to the trouble salvaging yours. A brand new tank, ordered Monday morning, arrived Wed. for $165 including shipping? Can't beat that!
