Automatic Transmission
I have a 1964 Corvette coupe with a 327, 300 HP which we cannot enjoy going any distance. I have given up on AACA judging. Without going computerized, what transmission can I put into the car? I would like a C5; is that possible? Is there anyone out there who can help me? I would sincerely appreciate any input into this matter. I would assume that the rear end gear ratio is what they issued from the factory. What gear would I need to coincide with the speedometer?
thanks

Do you want a overdrive? If not any other Trans is still going to be 1 to 1 in final gear. What's a C5 trans you talk of.

The C-5 trans cannot be fitted because it is a part of the rear diff of that generation Vette. What trans do you have now? If you do a search you will find some info on doing a swap to either a 3-speed or 4-speed automatic. Dennis

Being I am not as knowledgeable as you are, I am old time mechanic at 68 years old. I am not up to snuff with these new vehicles. Being I still enjoy my generation of vehicles, I would like to run my car down the road without engine turning 4000 rpms. You feel that I can use a 4-speed automatic. I have the original 2-speed power guide. A four speed means that I can talk with my wife at 70 mph. Will this transmission fit and what alterations would I have to make?
Thanks

The 200R4 can be modified to work well with the small block or even a big block even though it's original design was for the low horsepower 4 and 6 cylinder engines.
Many drag racers use it because it is lighter but still works.
Good choice to replace your powerglide.

Since your engine is not computer controlled you will need, or should have ability to lock up TQ converter. Below link is example of source.

To get an idea of what it takes to do a conversion, do a web search on 200r4 transmission as well as search this fourm too. Reading conversions will give you an idea of whats envolved when doing conversion requardless of model of car.

If you use a 3:08 rear axle, and the trans has a 1:1 final ratio (4th in 4 speed, and 2nd in Powerglide) with standard tires, you should turn 2600 rpms at 70 mph. You may have a 3:36, 3:55, or even 3:70 or more rear axle if you're turning more rpms than that. At the age of these cars, there's no telling what has been changed in the past.
I have a 300hp 4 speed with a 3:08 rear and I run 2600 rpms at 70, and even with side pipes I can carry on a conversation. (if you raise your voice a little)
