Wow! That's quite a collection. Uh, what age is your friend?......Just wondering if he will have enough years to use all those parts and finish his projects.

Thanks for the interesting story and pics. Doug

Whoa or Wow, I'm not sure.

In one sense, I'm glad someone stored away all those parts because, I'm sure many of them ended up in landfills during the 1970's, or were sold for scrap metal.

No doubt he is pack rat---but in a good way.
Looking through your post reminded me of what I did last weekend. I went through my parts totes and wondered what I should throw away. I ended up discarding very little but at least I know what I've got.
After 30 years I thought I had collected a lot of parts. Looking at your pictures made me realize I was just getting started.

WOW is right! Such mixed emotions seeing all this, from "what a waste", to "be realistic in what you can achieve" in your lifetime.
The sad thing is, when a person like this has the mind set that "I'll need this at some point"....for most, that "point" never happens and the stuff just sits and rots. Sounds like to me he needs some help in time management.
Very nice of you Rich to help someone out. You're whole personality is helping others...and again it shows here. I bet you felt like a kid in a candy store!
Here's mud in your eye!!

Good Lord - how does he even know/remember what he has?

I think this has the makings of a new TV series pilot - "Hoarders - the Corvette edition".

When I went back home to get my '64 I stored away since school, I made a chart with fields indicating

incorrect parts, OEM/NOS parts need/got into categories (suspension, brakes, engine, etc)

The GM part numbers are all in the chart, along with repro or OEM

A little more work, but a system that I check off

Default Almost gives me a reason to dust off the ski mask!

Get out my best black outfit and get some batteries for my flashlight! Just kidding!

I have only seen about 3 parts collections similar. Someone will have that whole thing bought very quickly!

What he really needs is someone to help organize and catalog all that stuff.

That would make it a lot easier for those he leaves behind when the day comes.

I saw a similar collection, with just about as much stuff as above, a few years ago that was bought up for about $25K because the family had no idea what was there.

I'll bet you could pick up any item and he would be able to tell you where he got it and what project is was for or from.

The funny thing is, until you moved it all, I bet the guy could pretty much go to any part you name and find it in short order. "Door panel for the black '62? Yup, that corner over there, in the pile below the window, about 2 feet down!"

BTW I showed that to my wife, so she can see I'm NOTHING compared to that. She asked whether the guy has a wife, and said if he does, she has to be the most patient woman on earth!

Rich,
Thanks for the pics. What a trove! Some of us will need to live to 100+ to finish our projects and sell our parts.

Well, we just got back at 4AM. We left MD at 9AM, drove all day sharing the 1000 or so miles back to Florida. Other than some downpours in SC, GA, and FL, we made it. John just dropped me off at my house and we had a good old Corvette buddy handshake.

Since I just had my 8th coffee in 16 hours, I can't sleep. Here goes.......

When I got hit with the mud, John got out of the truck, saw me laughing like crazy, and roared and laughed so loud he had tears in his eyes. We all were so tired from the move it was a great diversion from our sore bodies. I started to laugh so hard I cried too. I wish we had it on a video clip. John said he hasn't laughed that hard in 20 years.

Those FI units you see are just a few. He has about 20 of them in various stages. He many in FL as well. We counted 16 engines off the truck. A '54 6 cyl, 548's, 519's, 870's, 180's, etc. Dozens of rare heads and intakes.

JZ....That box from Frank Burell was pretty cool. Frank was the lead mechanic on the '56 Sebring program and John got the whole package of stuff from Frank's estate when he bought the #1 Sebring race car(The Real McCoy) many years ago. There's other stuff from Frank too and I'll have to find the pics.

Also from Frank is this weird looking U-shaped lift ring they used to pull the engines out of the '56's at the Sebring track. It was made for dual four intakes. It fits down into 2 plenum ports, you twist the knuckles underneath the ports and it grabs the intake solidly. Then the hoist would raise the engine with a hook on the lift bar.

He has many Corvettes. Some of them run, most don't......Running are his '11 Grand sport, '96 Conv, and his '56 Silver 2 top car that I got the power top working on a few months ago.

Here are some more pics for your enjoyment.

Some of the Frank B stuff. Grand Sport Radiator and Seat track assembly. And a rare De Dion rear axle, IIRC the same one that was used on the Duntov SS Race Car.

The 2 '57's in waiting to the right of the garage.

Some pics of a real '61 big tank big brake fuelie.

Under that pile of stuff sits a 1959 Stingray Body....

This is the thread you can refer too when ever the wife says "why can't we get rid of some of this stuff and clean up this mess". This is justification for most of us who think maybe we need to scale down.
Incredible! Just incredible!

I think some of John's stuff should be donated to the NCM and its a tax deduction...maybe they can start an "Historical Parts" section (I've never been there). Of, if not, maybe just a consignment loan to the NCM. Full credit to John of course.

Maybe they would prob provide a curator to catalog the rarer stuff, put a value on it, and decide which pieces are of enough significance to be displayed/stored. The not-so-rare stuff could help backfill the sinkhole....

Seriously, letting some of this stuff rust away for another 52 years is unconscionable.

That is a different 401K for sure, assuming that the owner wants to sell, sell, sell.

Just the 20 or so F/I units are worth a lot.

What's with the decrees? It's his stuff.

He saved all that from being melted in the metal scrap yards.
