Default Th350 trans and driveshaft in my 66

Hi,

I've had a few issues with the TH350 that the previous owner converted to in my 66, so I just bit the bullet and ordered a new trans from Summit/TCI. Well I was stupid enough to presume that I had a "short" TH350 with the 6inch extension housing. After pulling the driveline I realized that I have the 9inch housing version in my car and a new 6 inch extension trans in the box.

So one obvious option is to ship it back and exchange for a long one, but I was wondering if a stock C2 driveshaft and the short TH350 would also solve my problem? Part of the reason I made the incorrect assumption is I thought the short TH350 was not only used in the c3 but a direct bolt in (with some exhaust mods) for a powerglide? But if this is correct then the previous owner must have cut down the drive shaft to fit this trans?

Thoughts?

I was trying to keep this job simple so I could get it down on my week off. An overdrive would be nice, but didn't want to worry about other related mods, just a quick pull and replace. I already have a good converter and I know exhaust clears the TH350. Also with 3.08 rear gears highway cruising seems reasonable.

Anyway, anyone know if a short housing TH350 will fit with a stock driveshaft? If it will I'll just order one and keep going with the holiday project. It amazes me that someone would shorten the driveshaft for a th350 when they could have simply chosen the shorter version and saved the trouble. Is there something I'm missing here?

And here is one other weird thing....

My speedometer reads correctly and there is a ratio converter tucked under the drivers side footwell. I think I have a green speedo drive gear. Anyone know if there is usually required for a th350 conversion? If not this is even more confusing.

For $125. you can get the driveshaft re tubed to the length you need and use the trans you have. An exchange will probably cost you that much in freight charges.
They can usually fix a driveshaft in one day. Good time to get new U joints and a good balance while you are at it.

When I built my 63 I used a TH-350 from a 78 Camaro. Short tailshaft housing, original driveshaft from the 63. Had to change the front driveshaft yoke to match the trans output shaft. Did not have to shorten/lengthen the 63 driveshaft.

Thanks everyone, sounds like it's a viable option to get a stock c2 shaft or just have mine modified back to stock length to suit.

It seems that whoever installed that 350 in your car bubba'd in a long tail shaft trans into your car. IMO the correct thing to do would be to would be to mod your driveshaft back to stock length to work with this trans.
I found this article informative....

The short Turbo 350 was the same length as the manual 4 speed. Driveshafts will interchange. A '66 yoke should work on the stock length driveshaft with the short Turbo.
