Default 1966 Corvette 327/350 Fuel Pump

Need to replace my fuel pump. What is the difference between the AC Delco 40366 and 40083? Which one is correct for me?

Lots of difference in the inlet / outlet configuration.
The 366 appears to be correct for the 396 and early 427.
The 083 is the correct FP for 65 327 SHP engines and possibly the 66 L79.

According to 1966 Corvette NCRS Technical Info And Judging Manual the AC Delco #40083 is for the L79 350 hp. The AC Delco #40366 is used for the L36 390hp and the L72 425 hp BIG BLOCK engines.

Cannot rebuild mine as it is the crimped style that, I believe, came out in 1967. Anyone have a 1966 L79 GM#6415325, Part #40083, that's new or rebuilt for sale?

LICS, Paragon, and a few others (CC and Zip??) sell rebuilt originals. Not certain who the rebuilder is.

I have heard that the core, etc is fine, but that not all the miscellaneous parts are totally correct…………although they are close and the pump will function okay. Price is around $200-300.

You can buy something similar without the logos for less.

I've read that GM used several "authorized" manufacturers for their fuel pumps. AC, Carter, etc. Anyone know if this is correct? What would be the problem replacing my AC with a Carter?

Probably nothing as far as function goes.

The NCRS Judges will not like it. Also, you MAY have to re-route the fuel lines, depending on the pump selected.

Also make sure that the pump you select has a capacity and discharge pressure in the range specified in the Chevrolet Service Manual. To low or to high a pressure can cause carb problems.

As Ironcross suggests, try NAPA for a generic replacement if the $$$ for the #40083 are too steep. NAPA still has good parts. Probably an Airtex brand. I think they are making pumps for ACDelco and others nowadays.

Beware of paying big dollars for the look alike 40083 fuel pumps with the incorrect tops and bottoms. Original 40083 pumps tops are magnesium, have additional gussets at the tower, have AC cast in the tower. Bottom has only inlet and outlet 180 degrees apart with those words cast into the base below each fitting. They do not have an additional 5/16 inch hole cast in the lower housing above the inlet in the lower base. Do your research on a real 40083 fuel pump.

Thanks. I'm going to need the 40083 for my 350hp. The 4657 is for 300hp.

I got one from Goat Hill Classics that has all of the AC castings and markings as original. The cost was pretty reasonable compared to Paragon.

I don't think that they have a website. He rubs some people the wrong way, but so far mine works fine.
