It goes on the COND line/tubing connection at the accumulator drier inlet. Not something you can add after the system is charged.
Not certain why it is used or need??

Maybe someone else with factory AC will confirm or provide a picture for you.

At least that is what is on my car. In the pic he sent, it looks like the boot came off the connection and just slid down the tubing toward the condenser.

As I said earlier, the boot should cover the drier COND side tubing connection nut. So the one in the 69z28 pic should be slid upwards so that it is next to the drier, and that the barrel of the boot covers the COND connection.
At least that is what is on my car. In the pic he sent, it looks like the boot came off the connection and just slid down the tubing toward the condenser.

I see no signs of this boot on my unmolested system.

What was its purpose? I thought it looked like the drain boot.

I have the same question myself. It is not shown in the AIM, Factory Service Manual, Parts Books, or Noland's Book on C2 Cars….or mentioned in the NCRS Judging Manual.
I only thing I can figure, is that it was a factory cover/protector for that condenser outlet line male fitting. Perhaps to keep it from getting damaged during shipping and handling to the St Louis factory. When the drier was connected, it had no further use and could be left dangling, removed, or slipped back over the finished drier COND connection.
Best I can come up with. The other drier connection (EVAP connection) does not have a similar piece, although thet connection is made up from high pressure rubber hose with a metal end connection that goes to the expansion valve.
As I stated earlier, I dunno…………

so for judging should I leave the boot hanging down or covering the nut? also was there a red cap on the dryer sight eye to protect it?

i have had my car judged with a protective cap on the sight glass and without with no deductions. Some say it was normal dealer prep to remove the cap.

I would cover the COND tubing nut/connector like is on my 1967 car now. That is just me. That is the way it was when I bought this 26,000 mile car over twenty years ago.
Yes, a red cap is installed on the drier sight glass. Mine is painted black. The NCRS Judging Manual does say to look for the cap. It also says the cap is installed prior to (black) drier painting at the factory. So according to NCRS, the cap is black.
I can easily see that dealer prep for an AC car would include checking refrigerant charge. The cap was probably taken off the drier sight glass at that point, never to be re-installed.
