Default The Last Corvette (Sting Ray)

This car was back @ B-J and sold for $666,000. I think that's about what it sold for when auctioned by Terry Michaelis. (In 2008?)

If I recall correctly, this Corvette started the restoration process with nothing more than a VIN and Trim Tag plate. There was a lawsuit after the auction after this information was made known. Haven't heard much more after that.

Didn't Gary Nabors in Houston do the restoration on the last 67?

Yes, he did, and Bill Mock owned it before it was sold to Terry Michaelis; I judged the car at Kissimmee in 2006.

JohnZ beat me to the answer (yes). SPEED channel had a big show about this spread over several episodes. I recorded them all & burned the whole thing to DVD. The show was about finding the car & Nabors restoring it. It was also interspersed with a history of the Corvette. The last episode covered all the shows Terry Michaelis entered it (Bloomington, Amelia Island) and the episode concluded with the B-J Auction (in 2008?). I watched it again last Summer (for the first time since it originally ran). Very enjoyable.

Default Last 67

I remember seeing the show also. Wasn't the block cracked and had to be replaced? Jerry

Yes - a corner was broken off the block while it was in transit from the machine shop.

Yes. There's a clip of Gary Nabors calling TM to tell him the block was dropped & a corner chunk of the block came off! Imagine making that phone call (or receiving it)!!!

So there was more than a VIN Tag and Data Plate to start with?

It was a NOM that was bought and stamped for this car.

Are you certain of this??

I am referring to the ORIGINAL car that was obtained by Bill Mock, not what was later sold to Terry for restoration.

I remember the add in the NCRS Driveline for years and years. And from what I recall it was a complete car. Then after Terry bought it and had it at Carisle it was shown as a complete car. But I could have sworn when Bill had it for sale it was advertised as a NOM.

JrRhino, you must not be a member of ncrs or longtime corvette person or you would see what the big deal is, not trying to be nasty but just saying.

and can't understand the significance of the last Sting Ray, since they have come back in the C-7. It is not the last Corvette either.

I remember talking to several Corvette Parts Vendors like Roger from Rogers Clock and he said the Terry M. was calling and asking vendors if they would help out in the restoration of the car. He asked Roger for all the gauges for the 67 and Roger told him "what di I get out of it?" Roger told him NO. I am pretty sure Terry called other vendors also to supply there product in helping the restoration of his car for him to sell and he will get all the money form the sale of the car and the vendor who helped supply the parts put the car back together. They would not even get there name posted anyplace for helping donate parts to restore the car so I bet most of the vendors did not send there product to have it restored. Heck they never got anything out of it.

Interesting history from 1994 to now. Check it out on the Proteam site (link):

www.thelastcorvette.com

Go down to the 3rd paragraph under the title "Its History". Describes how the price went from $18K to $22,940 (original 1994 seller to Bill Mock); to $229,400 (Bill Mock sale [unrestored] to Terry M).

Puts a light on why Bill M. is asking 1 million, 425 thousand, 396 dollars and 65 cents for the first 396. (VIN 12864)

I believe the car was also at the Michigan NCRS chapter meet a few years back as well. Nice car, but I wouldn't trade my similar appearing 67 for that one just because of the serial number.

If he thinks he can get that type of coin, more power to him, but I think that the asking price for either the 396 or the Armstrong car is delusional. Then again, TM ponied up nearly $230K for a fixer upper - but mostly as a marketing ploy. I don't know if that would work again.

"Stingray" (one word) was INTRODUCED at some point during C3 production, and brought back for the C7.

Sting Ray (two words) first appeared on Bill Mitchell's 1959 racer, which inspired the C2's styling. The name has ONLY appeared on 1963-67 production Corvettes so far.

So the last '67 IS the last Sting Ray. I agree it has better than average value, but nowhere near the mid six-figures it has achieved.

Thanks for the clarification on the C7 Stingray, for some reason I thought they went to Sting Ray for the C7 but never fully checked it out.
A proud owner of near the end of the run 67 Sting Ray's (Vin 21135). Maybe it has an enhanced value too?
Rick
