Default Teak wheel Original

Looking at originals for sale most of them seem to have a rosewood band that is the same color as the rest of the teak. (ebay or wherever) Has the rosewood band bleached out on most originals. I borrowed this pic from another thread that shows the dark band on this old time photo. other pic is what you usually see from a original now.

Default Teak wheel

Here is a picture of my original teak wheel. It is in my 1963 Z06 coupe, but it was added in 1964 by the original owner. It does seem to have the strip that you mention.

My 2cents; Darker woods will sun bleach, outdoor teak furniture is a common example.
Dark hardwood floors [natural, without stain] exposed to sun, lighten also.
Brgds,
Rene

Probably not added in '64 as they were not available until '65. But still very cool addition. Especially to a very special car like yours

Here's 4 pics of a wheel I bought in 1975 (well, my [then] girlfriend bought it for my birthday gift, as I balked at the $70 the guy was asking). I redid the top side (sanded, bleached the sweat burn areas), and applied a coat of Varathane.

Thanks; the under-dash ducts are in my basement (air hasn't worked since before I bought it in 1980). Not to brag, but it's a K66 tanker to boot .

Anyone know when the first reproductions came out? Approximately what year? I've got one hanging on the wall that hasn't seen daylight in about 40 years. I've always assumed it to be original as there were no repros back then to my knowledge. And as midstyle notes, they didn't use to cost a fortune.

Not sure when the reproductions first came out.I bought my first '66 in 1977. There were ads for them in the publications then. The earliest Vett Vues magazine that I have is 1974. There is an ad for them in there.

Could you send me a copy of that PM. It might be helpful in determining if my teak wheel is original as the seller so stated.

Default GM Prototype wood wheels.

Here are a few pictures of what original GM wood wheels look like.
There are 2 Teak , one with dark inlay and 1 with no inlay. The other wheela are different cool looking woods.
I got them from some relatives of a GM engineer. They did not like them or know what they were. They also threw away a bunch of metallic brakes which the engineer worked on in the 50's and 60's
