Never buy with cash.
How about the couple killed in SC.that were buying a 66 Mustang. I passed on a great deal on a 62 last summer because the guy would only accept cash. Dave

An elderly couple from South Carolina placed an ad on Craigslist looking for a classic Mustang. A man in rural Georgia responded to the ad, apparently indicating he had the car they were looking for.
The "seller" apparently robbed the couple, and killed them, when they came to look at, buy the car.
I assume from this that the couple was carrying cash with them. It wasn't clear from what I read if there really was a car.
In any event, sensible precautions would have mitigated this situation.
Sorry for the loss of a classic car guy and his wife.
A number of sellers will only deal in cash, and if you want to play with the big boys, you should be prepared to handle a cash transaction.
Personal checks are a no-no, unless you know and trust the buyer without question.
Certified checks are a better option, but they can and have been counterfeited before.
When I sold my 56 Vette, buyer paid with a certified check, but I was able to call the bank manager of the bank where the check was drawn and confirm
that it was a real certified check.
If you are dealing in cash, agree to meet in a public place. I had one local law enforcement officer tell me that his department was fine with people meeting in the parking lot of the sheriff's department.
If the seller is unwilling to meet in a public place, run forest run.
