Default Head bolts

Question....
I have a 327 L79 short block that was just freshly rebuilt for my 65. I want to install my freshly rebuilt double hump heads on it, and the only head bolts I have are original ones from a 283 motor. Two things...first, are the bolts the same? Second, can I reuse those bolts? I don't know if they "stretch" from being torqued. I can always buy aftermarket ones, but if these are good to use, why wouldn't I?

These old blocks use head bolts that are completely re-useable. Modern Engines use Torque to Yield head bolts that are not re useable. Your old bolts are good to go.
Should be no issue ever.
Torque to Yield bolts apply a certain amount of clamping force and then if you tighten them more they break, these are not ever re-useable but these were never used on the old engines and I never heard of them being used until the late 1980's.

Thanks for the replies. That's good to hear, I can put the money I saved toward other items!

The bolts on each end of the head by the oil drain back holes are shorter on late 283/283 heads and 327 using 327 heads than they are on early 265/283.

The 327 heads used four bolts in the specified location. 3" on the later heads vs 3 3/4" on the early heads.

Just make sure the bolt threads are not corroded and are clean. I also check that they are not stretched by mating up the threads with a known good bolt's threads, and checking total bolt lengths. I also try threading on a new nut of the same size & pitch (if the nut will not freely spin on, something is not "right").

Occasionally an old head bolt will be stretched, so best to find it before..... and new head bolts are not that expensive.

Thanks for the advise guys! Do I need to put any thread sealant (not teflon tape) on the threads like I sometimes see on the new repops?

Absolutely! For both thread sealant and correct torque readings.

ARP Thread Sealant is one, or Permatex Aviation Form-A-Gasket (my favorite).
