Sure....somebody will build a car around that worth 1/4 million dollars to the uninformed I've seen it done with early Shelby Mustangs.....if they're honest they'll call it a "tribute" car (whatever that means) but probably not...

Seller is in Austin TX. C-1 registry shows car 266 located in Austin as a project car, owner Jay Peterson. No idea whether that's the same one but it says it's one of the last 100 built. Wonder if that's who the phone number would come back to or not. And it says the frame on the car gave out, and the NY document shows Watertown NY which is in the heart of snow country.

You are correct on the phone #. I thought selling just a VIN plate without the car or large part of it, was illegal?

Well, indeed this is a very rare VIN tag.
It may be one of the very few Corvette VIN tags that WON'T come back as an "Original Big Block Car" 6 months after the tag sells!
Now that IS rare.

Not Illegal if it's just being sold as a stand alone item.

Maybe a collector wants to mount it in a frame for his office wall.

Only becomes illegal when it's separated from the original vehicle and attached to another one....for the purpose of re-registering it.

Not Illegal to possess or to sell.

The screw holes look to have been enlarged.
The seller buys cars and typically guts them for the parts.

I don't know much about the C1 series, but given the low production of 53s, it seems like it would be extremely difficult to create a car from nothing but the tag. Are there enough 53 parts out there do do that?

Would someone be crazy enough to try to "convert" a 54 into a 53?

I disagree on the selling.

If there is money to be made, (and there is), then I am very confident that someone will find a way to make it.
I can almost see it rolling onto the auction block now.
" Folks, we have here one of the last of the 53's, a beautiful restoration of a car that has rarely been seen or driven, with an amazing history....."
It will be a no-sale at it's high reserve, and that will be used to substantiate it's value at the next auction where it will be sold to a proud, but unsuspecting, new owner for mega-bucks.
Remember, they asked Willie Sutton why he robbed banks. His response was " Because that's where the money is" .
Sadly, the same could be said here.
Caveat Emptor.

You've obviously never heard the whole story of '53 #029.
It was almost the same thing, kinda, sorta

Nope, don't know anything about #029, but I can imagine it is not good. What I don't get is how with the internet there is such a thing as an uninformed buyer. The ad and this discussion alone pretty much let's the world know that at this point no car exists.

The guy who miraculously found the second #29 made it disappear very quickly, since the documented real one was in Florida and was displayed at Kissimmee a few years ago.
I actually had a very early 54 Corvette which was well documented and after I sold it a second one with the same VIN number showed up online.
Sort of like many 435 HP 67's
Buyer beware.......

The same seller tried to sell it on ebay a couple of years ago, along with a couple of parts and the "documentation." Included at that time was the 53 only hinges; he must have since sold them. I'm sort of an image hoarder, so I saved the pictures from the auction:
