Default 1961 Fusible Link

Hello,
I'm in the process of putting a complete new wiring harness from LL in my 61. I have read that I need to put a fusible link on the wire from the solenoid to the amp meter. Does the link go at the solenoid connection or under the dash near the guage? I talked to a tech guy at LL and he said was no need for the link but would like to put one on just not real sure where to put it. This is my first time completely rewiring a car. I greatly appreciate all the help.
Thanks
John

I put a 16 gu. 6" long fusable link at the starter solenoid.
This is where GM put them.

There is no downside (other than perhaps some judging point hits) to upgrading the C1 wiring with extra protection as cited in many places on this forum. And there is LOTS of upside. My 30 amp ammeter fuse has saved my butt twice and other forum members I know of 1/2 dozen times as well..

I use a spade type 30A fuse that glows when blown, you look up under the dash and there it is....no guessing...

With a fusible link it doesn't matter which end you do it. It's essentially a makeshift fuse.

So ask yourself the question: if it were to blow where would you rather work on rewiring a new link? Under the car at the starter or under the dash?

You NEVER want a fusible link in the cockpit - they tend to smoke when they blow and who needs that a few inches from your face

Put it at the solenoid.

Default One More Thing

Buy an extra one, and carry it as a spare.

Point taken.

Either way, they are a pain in the butt to replace on the side of the road. I like the idea of a real fuse instead.

Trying to make our C1 a little safer. I put a fuse holder with a 30amp spade type fuse into the ammeter wire at the solenoid. First time I attempted to start the car the fuse blew. Car has its original generator.

Please give me some direction. Where should I look to find out whats wrong here ?...or do I just plug in a 40a fuse ?

Looked at all the wiring under the dash and don't see any that is cut, frayed, pinched, etc.

Thanks-
Ryan22

You need a slow blow fuse, an auto resetting circuit breaker or a fusible link. A normal fuse will not work well here. See the other thread you started for additional answers.
