Funky Tachometer
The tach has decided to stop going back to zero. For a while it was at around 2K and would sometimes go back to zero, and other times bounce around. This week it pegged itself and just sites there or bounces around a bit.
Is there any reason to see if I can fix this, or is it time for a rebuild, and repaint. And if I do that one, I better do the speedometer since it stopped working last month, and if I do that, I better do the ammeter since it never worked, and then if I do those I better do the temp and oil pressure since they work, but will look bad. And the clock. Damn this is getting expensive fast...

The first time my battery fails,
The first time the starter solenoid clicks,
The first time an instrument fails
I buy a new one!.
Or in your case, have it rebuilt so that the NCRS police don't get you.

The cable is good. If it went bad, I would assume the tach would read zero, or always low. But for me to shut the car off and have the tach reading anything other then zero I have to assume it is internal to the tach.

Suggest you just go ahead and lift body and restore the whole freakin thing.

I wouldn't rule out the cable. Those *** things are temperamental little ***s. Pull the internal cable out of the outer case, clean, relube, reinstall & if that doesn't work restore the whole thing.
