Default Side pipes, why St. Louis and not AO Smith

OK, Here is a question from the less educated.

Why were side pipe equiped cars only from the St. Louis plant?

This A.O. Smith thing is confusing. Was this a different plant or were these "bodies" made and then all assembly was done at St Louis?

Just wondering why these A.O. Smith cars never had side pipes.

Thanks

I would add this little tidbit. Since all the bodies were built the same except for the sidepipe option, why tool up another plant for the sidepipe option since it was such a small percentage of production?

Approximately half of the ’64-’67 Corvette bodies were built under contract by the A.O. Smith Corporation in Ionia, Michigan. John Hinckley (aka JohnZ) wrote an excellent article on the subject that was published in the June 2006 Corvette Enthusiast magazine. It’s a must read for midyear owners.
