Ps- I should've defined a driver quality job in my mind at least:

All the exterior surfaces of the car are factory straight, not worked to better than factor standards. The jambs are done if the car needs them (mine does) but you haven't spent the extra time to make the car lose the factory look particularly below the belt line or stressed to fix normal irregularities in hood fits, door gaps not brought to Mercedes standards, etc.

The really hot trend right now it "Barn Find". Any number of shops have developed the technique. It takes a certain amount of skill to make the dirt look real. You also need a couple of different barns. If the same barn starts to appear too often people catch on.

I collect electric guitars... I could never understand it (still can't), but an entire industry sprang up a few years ago to "relic" a new guitar to look old and beat up. Then, the manufacturers (Fender) tried to get in on the craze by "pre-relic-ing" their guitars, so they looked old and beat up right away...

I remember going into a music store and seeing 5 "pre-relic'd" guitars on the wall - all identical! Not good.

I hope we don't follow this model in the vintage Corvette world... but I have noticed more and more "rat rods" at shows that look a little "pre-relic'd"

Driver quality would be nice paint but flawed. Still shines but has a few scratches, nicks.

Fake Patina is just that, fake. You can't really get away with it. Real Patina is only acquired by age.

Doing a 1957 Nomad too. Painting the roof a heavy silver flake because we had to fix some rust but the car was painted in the '70's. I'm going to leave the rest of the paint alone. Real Patina.

This is my original paint Trophy Blue '66 I've had since 1971.
The part of the decklid protected by the convertible top is still close to the original blue, the rest-not so blue anymore.

Thats what my painter says.

People ask for a "driver" job, but basically what they want is a nice job at half the price.

He hates those conversations.

Since I am redoing the rest, I was going to repaint her.
After reading all these comments I'm thinking on leaving the paint alone.
It's 51 years old and even thought there are chips and cracks, I really like
the original color red.

The '62 has some small touch-up spots all done well prior to my ownership which began in November of '70. In the picture below, had been sitting for at least 25 years at this location:

Refreshed with at least 95% of original paint:

Nice thread.....here's my contribution.
This is an original 427/425hp car. It lost it's 427 in '69 and replaced with a 327. Originally a rally red car. No plans on changing anything except the engine when I stumble across a worthy donor.

The driver paint topic has been done to death, but the problem is not that a car with a decent body cannot be painted for that "7k" it is that you cannot blow the car apart, strip it, paint it and retrim it with new rubber, emblems etc. People in this hobby are old enough by and large they want show paint and trim in every nook and cranny to be proud, so they pay artists like Dub and Coletta to put that time in. The level of paintwork we are seeing is not Good Paint Job- it's art in the details. Nothing wrong with it.

Dom - I would think long and hard before stripping off that 51 year old paint.

I was amazed at how much good an afternoon with a claybar, touch-up paint, and Zaino polish did for my 54 year old paint!

I don't know about the "by and large part". I would agree that there are some that like to sit around at cruises and car shows and collect the oohs and aahs of an admiring public.

As demonstrated here in this thread, seems like there's many here that don't really care for the applause and admiration of the public, they just like to see all the bonding strips and body reinforcement show through the aged original lacquer!

I have read here on this forum (just recently) that anybody that doesn't have a $10-$12K paint job on their car is just too cheap and has no pride. I don't think that's the case at all.

This car is BITCHIN'. I would never paint your car. My car is a 427 390 hp. Gonna fix the body and flares and leave it in primer.
