Let's not forget what is considered the "One Year Only" 1958 Corvette, which I believe out of all the years saw the most dramatic changes and is one of the most beautiful corvettes made.
1958 saw the following changes
* Only year with chrome trunk irons
* Only year with "wash board" engine hood
* Only year with vinyl pebble grain
* First year for dual headlights
* First year to offer seat belts
* First year where bumpers were actually bolted to the frame
* First year that turned a profit for GM

Also on that day...
The Chairman of GM, along with an entourage of about 50 assistants, yes-men, hangers-on, and curiosity seekers went down on the factory floor to watch as the first Corvettes rolled off the line.
After taking a look at the finish on the first of the shiny, white machines, he was heard to exclaim, "Damn, that looks just like the peel of an orange!"
As if on cue his entire entourage chimed in, "Yes, yes it does!".........and they thought he meant it as a good thing.
On that fateful day "Orange Peel" was firmly ingrained into the corporate culture of GM and they have been striving mightily ever since to replicate that finish on every car built!
