'66 SB Battery Location
I am working on my wife's '66 C2. I am about to replace the battery in it. It puzzles me why the battery is so close to the exhaust manifold where there seems to be a huge amount of room outboard to the fender. There is about 1" of clearance between the heat shield and the manifold. If I look straight down from the fender inner lip, I see about half the battery. Does this seem right?
Thanks,
Brian

As long as you have the "battery heat shield", "which looks like yours is there" on/in place all is good...

If I look at the battery trays in the link you sent, it appears that more of the battery is hanging outside the frame rails. Where on this car, more of the battery is handing on the inside of the frame? So in other words, the battery is much closer to the exhaust manifold. This is why I wonder if I have the right battery tray. I am not sure all is good...

For one thing it's the wrong battery. That looks like a group 27 deep cycle marine battery. A group 24 car battery will have more room.

I'm sure they do, but group 24 posts should be closer together than these appear to be. I think the battery is too long. That's based on what I can see and obviously I can't see the rest of the battery or the mount. I wouldn't use a deep cycle battery in either size in my car.

Well, that battery will obviously come out. It is in fact a group 24. It doesn't extend beyond the battery tray anyway. So even a smaller battery would only move it small amounts. It would seem that it should be 4" plus more outboard.

Does the battery tray appear to be mounted in the correct position? I can't look at mine to see where it should be because mine is an a/c car and it's on the driver's side and turned endways. I don't recall any previous non a/c car being so close to the manifold.

Well, I am not sure what is in here is the correct tray. It fits like it should fire and aft, but aide to side seems wrong. Hence the post.
But the question ramains, if I don't have the correct tray, what do I have and how will I know if I buy the right tray.

Your battery should sit like this. There is plenty of room between the exhaust manifold and the heater hoses.
(Notice the poles on your battery are on the wrong side)

Go to licorvette.com and search for part 27-01B. Note that 66 cars non AC is a one year only battery tray. You may have the wrong tray in there. My 66 is an AC car so I cant give you any specific dimensions.
Also your overflow tank does not appear to be mounted correctly. On mine half the tank is tucked under the fender. Search overflow or expansion tanks in the archives and you might find a picture.

I just went out and measured my 'non AC' battery shield to exhaust manifold...
It measures 2" from battery shield to the manifold...
I am not running the spark plug shields..eventually I'll get them on...

As for the overflow bottle. It is not mounted to the car right now. I took the bands off it and pulled it out of the way to show the battery better.

Those are great pictures of your battery location. I will be checking mine tonight. It seems like I either have the wrong tray or it is mounted in backwards. Thank you!

Well, I took the battery and tray out tonight. It seems I have two problems. One, I don't think I have the right tray. Mine looks like the pictures of the '63-'65. The '66 looks a bit different. Can anyone explain why these are different?
But my real problem was that the tray was installed in the wrong direction. The stud in the picture below was nearest the exhaust manifold. I flipped it around and now it puts the battery in a perfect spot.
I glass beaded it and painted it. Now it's perfect. But still why is the '66 different than the rest?
