Motor oil cost

It never does. I have been a Parts Manager at a dealership for 16 years and in the automotive business over 25. I think I remember it going down ONCE in that time & it was by pennies. About the luckiest you ever get is it will stay the same and not go up when oil is cheap. I don't know why.

I suspect the driving factors are the refining costs, additives, and packaging and not the cost of crude. And then would the cost of crude have any effect on the price of synthetics?

Same reasons given over and over.....yet the price WILL go up as soon as crude rises, even synthetics.

And you think the price of crude crashed because "they CAN!"
Thank goodness for greed. I want XOM to be able
to pay me dividends. Without greed(self interest) we
would be on the "ash heap" of history like the former
Soviet Union. They worked for patriotism which is not
a good motivator for people to work hard.

I think the price of crude crashed for same reason any other commodity fluctuates in the global economy. Politics and money! I totally believe in free enterprise having been a businessman for 30 years but, mark my words that, the "crash" as you refer to it, (I think of it as more of a slow downward trend) will come full circle to reap even larger profits for the powers that be.
Also, greed (especially corporate greed) which you seem to be so thankful for is, IMO one of the major factors ruining this great country since these "Special Interest" groups are in essence running our country through their political connections.

I did get a price reduction of $3-$4 per case recently. My 5 gallon oil was also reduced by not at the same rate as gas was reduced.
I was told by one of my suppliers that because of the materials that makes the qt. bottles and the additives are still are high so the oil price stays up.

Oil is not like Gas (fuel) It's not something you buy everyday, and most people never buy it, they just run down and get their oil changed. They only see the cost of the oil change and think the shops are high priced not the oil.
No reason to lower the price as the producers aren't feeling the criticism.
Gary's '66. I think crude went down so much to make other extractions methods unprofitable.

That's what my understanding is as well. Then when the companies using those methods are squeezed out prices will go back up ad infinitum.

I think it's the steady addition of more sophisticated (and more expensive) additives/ingredients, hopefully creating more effective lubrication and protection.
Always purchase by the case. A couple of months ago my Castrol Syntec was eight bucks a quart, while the case price was $22 at Walmart.

Oils have gotten better over the years, but like college costs, their price has exceeded inflation.
