I don't think Top Gear is too credible place to look for a review on much of anything. He is running a show for profit.

My current ride but it is getting old. 45-50 mpg and the depreciation has been long gone from this model. Plenty of room inside for two adults and plenty of room in the back for whatever you want to throw in there. High enough that you don't have to double up to get in and out. Great visibility. Don't make fun of the Smart Car if you haven't tried it.
The Smart Car looks pretty good to me.

the primary purpose of buying the Smart was to use it as a flat- towed vehicle behind a small motor home as it weighs less than 2K, not as a daily driver.

That is a great idea. We travel quite a bit in a 26 foot RV without towing anything but it presents problems when we want to venture into cities for sight seeing. That thing would be perfect.

as a new 'RV'er (a 201hp Volkswagon Eurovan powered 22ft Winnebago Rialta conversion), that was exactly the problem I was trying to overcome. from what I have read, many people use Smarts as a 'dinghy' (towed vehicle) because of its light weight and that it is flat-towable (4 wheels on the ground; and, not all cars, especially with automatic transmissions, are nowadays...).
there are some preparations each and every time: a 'push this, switch that, etc' list (kinda like a pilot's preflight checklist ) in order to overcome the car's electronics and security features; and a custom front hitch subassembly/tow bar (paid less than $700 for parts and will install myself).
