62 Tranny Issue...need help
Out for a drive on this fine Memorial holiday and while easing down
an off ramp the clutch pedal went really stiff and I couldn't get any gear.
Now with the engine off, I can get all four forwards but with the engine
running and clutch depressed as far as possible, cannot get any gear and
hear a strong whine from the tranny. What failed?
As always, appreciate any help.

Could be anything from a clutch linkage failure to throw out bearing to pressure plate failure to linings coming off the clutch disc. Something is keeping the clutch from disingaging which is keeping you from shifting while the the engine is running and those are the only things it could be. It's not the pilot bushing.

There is no way to diagnose the specific failure by long distance, but Randy's list of possibilities is the list of things you need to check. The clutch is not disengaging.

I would have someone depress the clutch pedal all the way down, with the engine off, and look at the linkage to make sure nothing has failed and if the clutch fork is moving at the bell housing?
You should remove the inspection cover and see if anything is laying in the cover.

As it turns out, none of the above suggestions were the real culprit.
A flange that holds one of the springs on the clutch plate failed and
allowed the spring to disengage from the plate. The spring and the piece
of the flange were floating around and caused the clutch to freeze up.
Many thanks to all who responded and she is back on the road after
an unexpected addition to the credit card.
