Radiator Shroud Incomplete?
Hello Gentlemen: My '65 Coupe (327/365) keeps a great temperature reading on the highway, but inches toward overheating when I'm in traffic. I have read advice on this Forum for people with a similar problem and that advice always includes making sure there are no gaps in the shroud.
Below is a picture looking down towards the bottom of the shroud. That reddish-white you see is the floor of my garage. Is there a shroud piece missing that should be there?
Thanks

Does you car have AC?
If so, you need the extension that goes on bottom of shroud...:cheers
OR...you could just put one on if you want to help cooling...

66Jack beat me to it, in addition here's a better view of both upper and lower seals for AC cars (and those cars without AC that should help in cooling).

Kerouac - Just to make sure, have you confirmed that the elevated temps seen on the dash gauge are correct readings, meaning have you verified them with an IR gun? And, could you give us a better 'read' on where the needle is pointing in both cases?

Doc Rebuild has everything you need, as well. Buy upper radiator support to shroud seal, as well as, the lower shroud extension. Just curious, why aren't you running a fan clutch?

Mike: Yes, I have verified temp accuracy with an IR gun. As for the "read" -- my 65 apparently has a 66 gauge, so it goes up to 250. When driving on the highway the needle sits directly on the marker between 100 and 210. In bad stop and go traffic it will creep into the yellow. That's as far as it's gotten before I've been able to resume higher speeds and that drops it back down. I should mention that this is happening WITHOUT the AC on. The car has never actually overheated, but I have pulled over and shut it off when it hits yellow for fear that it was about to. Thanks,

Lower seal is missing. Lower seal should be there whether or not the car has C60. In addition, it would be a good idea to seal all around between the rad and the shroud with foam weatherstripping, such as the type used to seal window air conditioner installations. Get it at any hardware store and stuff it into all gaps around bottom, top and sides.

And you could also add the '66 top seal.
Not sure if this is the factory orientation, but it seemed to me that this would prevent airflow OVER the core support. It definitely helped. Maybe 3-4 degrees.

Yes, it does - it prevents the "idle recirculation" effect where hot air that has just exited the radiator gets sucked over the top of the rad support and is re-introduced into the front of the radiator (that situation only occurs at idle and in slow stop-and-go traffic).

Great explanation, John. Thank you. I think I'll be following all these excellent suggestions.
